Sorry, I won't be at Balticon. I should really try that con; I hear good things about it, and it no longer tends to be during Pesach.
Have they solved the smoking problem? I actually did go to a Balticon about twelve years ago; while I enjoyed the convention itself, I was sick within hours of arrival from the clouds of smoke everywhere in the hotel. I gather that things are much better now, but I figured I'd ask.
(I'm also not very good at doing cons by myself, and my husband mostly isn't into it, but with Balticon at least I know I'd have other friends there, like you and the Felds and dglenn and probably bunches of other people.)
Smoking is less of a problem at cons in general, since most hotels don't allow it outside of smoking rooms. It wasn't one two years ago, when we were there last.
Having it over Memorial Day is great for us - it's about when we need a convention and it's easy enough getting the day off.
I would enjoy that! And in general, I would enjoy spending time with you in person.
I will keep next year in mind. It sounds like fun, it's a three-day weekend (so Sunday can be leisurely -- or does the con run through Monday?), and it's a good time of year for travel. If I start early, I can probably find someone to go with me and do all the driving. :-) (I hate driving. At least it would all be daylight this time of year, so I could if I had to, but...)
I don't like driving, but I'm capable of doing my share on a (daylight) road trip. (I'm legal to drive at night, but I also have enough of a brain to realize the circumstances under which that's a bad idea -- higher speeds, unfamiliar territory, precipitation...)
But yeah, I think I used to tolerate driving better than I do now; there just seem to be more idiots on the roads now than there used to be [1], and I find myself having to drive even more defensively than I used to, and the attention all this demands is draining. So I arrive at my destination already tired, and if the point was to, say, go to a con and have fun for a weekend, that's inconvenient. It's bad enough that we usually need a vacation after our vacations; we shouldn't also need one before. :-)
[1] For example, consider the combination of: SUV, cell-phone, 75mph.
BTW.
Are you going to Balticon?

Also. You could join us for Shabbat dinner. :)
Maybe next year.

I'm OK with driving in general, if I'm heading (or would like to head) in the same direction as you.
