Book Review
the curious incident of the dog in the night-time
a novel by
mark haddon
I am leaving all of those words uncapitalized, despite the fact that I hate it and really want nothing more than to run back and Fix Them All, because that is how it is on The Cover Of The Book, and perish forbid I should change anything about The Cover Of The Book. I will just throw a few extraneous capitals into my own sentences to make up for it. ;)
This starts out funny and ends up feel-good-y. In between, it is about a teenage boy with some disorder that sounds similar to mild autism (it never tells you, I am just guessing and am quite probably wrong), who decides to be a detective and find out why the dog next door was murdered. He sees no reason all detective stories should be about people being murdered and not dogs because "I wanted to write about something real and I knew people who had died, but I did not know any people who had been killed, except Mr. Paulson, Edward's father from school, and that was a gliding accident, not murder, and I didn't really know him. I also said that I cared about dogs because they were faithful and honest, and some dogs were cleverer and more interesting than some people, Steve, for example who comes to the school on Thursdays, needs help to eat his food and could not even fetch a stick. Siobhan asked me not to say this to Steve's mother."
I enjoyed it much more at the start than at the finish, despite its ending in a satisfactory manner. I think what messed it up for me was a probably entirely-too-accurate description of the London train system, and the people who ride it; and a bit too much swearing. Other than that, it was a pretty fascinating look at the world from someone's eyes who sees things very differently than most people. Also, it has math problems solved in it. :)
