Rats are amazing creatures, they are very intelligent. If you buy a healthy rat, he or she will be with you for up to three years (some live longer). You just have to avoid direct exposure to sun, draughts and low/high temperatures. Otherwise they require only your love. Also, they cannot be left alone for more than two days, they cannot take that. If you know you will not be able to spend a lot of time with her, consider to buy a couple (two girls or two boys). Girls are more gentle. If you have a couple, they will not be so attached to you. But they will keep each other company when you are away.

I'm very sorry about your cat. You know, I treat this world as a mathematically balanced place (and balance can be ugly), I won't go into further explanation, but the main thing is that there is no such thing as 'moral justice'. Just ice cold plus and minus all the way. Religions do not give me any passable reasons for why living creatures should suffer and be tortured and killed. I don't believe in afterlife. I was christian until my grandmother's death, and it just proved: no, man, somebody got it very wrong. If good people die like this, I do not want to be one.
