So, I signed up for a free month of Netflix, because why not?

And I watched The Last Airbender, because why not? It's free.

I'm glad I didn't waste money on seeing it in the theatre. It's terrible for any and all the reasons I've heard and more.

Yes, Katara and Sokka and their grandmother stand out like sore thumbs in a village otherwise populated by people of color. Even if I hadn't seen all the racewank discussion, I'd have noticed that much on my own. It's really kind of obvious.

Also, just a lot of other, smaller things, that nonetheless add up.

Why why why the mispronunciations? Did no one working on this movie even watch the show? Why change any of the pronunciations? Why does the Fire Lord seem to actually care about his son a little? Why did none of the Earth Nation people fight back when they were surrounded by earth? I mean, in the series, they were so defeated because they were kept in a place with no earth to bend (or so it was thought). Where is Avatar Roku? Why is there no Koizilla? So, the Fire Nation ships flee because Aang threw a big wave at them? Uh huh... and Zhao is drowned by a bunch of waterbenders.

And the Avatar isn't supposed to hurt people? :/ Uh... that's going to cause problems later when, you know, all of Aang's past live encourage him to kill the Fire Lord. It's not the Avatar that isn't supposed to hurt people! S/he is when it's in the best interest of the world. It's the air nomads that taught this philosophy to Aang, and it just seems so pointless to make it a part of the Avatar.

Also, there's no time to get to know these characters, thanks to the movie having to cover the entirety of the first season (or some of it, anyway). There's no believability to the building friendship between these characters, because there's actually no time to build it.

Also, they took out every truly deep and interesting part of the series. They took Katara's hope speech and gave it to Aang. They took out Katara's fight to be trained by Master Pakku (did they even name Pakku? I admit, there's a point in the middle where I kind of zoned out...).

Also, Katara's necklace is crooked.

Also, why is Sokka's hair so long?

Also, why does Appa have weird dangling feet oh no wait those are children never mind.

Wow, I actually didn't think I had quite that much to say about it. I'm not emotionally involved in the series, though I really like it a lot.

I guess it's just... this movie was obviously made by people--or the important decisions belonged to people--who simply had no understanding or respect for the source material. That's why it came out so terrible. A simply bad movie would have been better than this if only it had been made with actual love and respect for the original series in mind. This... was not. And it's very obvious.

And that's what pisses me off more than anything else.

If you're going to make a movie out of any other medium, then make it one you know and love.

Ffff, I'm done.
