[Books/Movies/Fandom] The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

So, apparently I never talked about these books when I read them. Which isn't all that surprising, actually. I haven't made it a secret that I was... slightly disappointed in these books.

But let me talk about why.

I was disappointed with the books as well (mainly the last book actually) and I've always felt in the minority about that. While I never really considered the things you bring up here, S, I couldn't agree more. From the books you get the sense that Peeta is the more emotional of the two, so it would make sense to tell it from his POV if you were doing it in first person. But that wouldn't really work from a narrative standpoint. Hmm..

The random jumps in time annoyed me as well. I really wanted to see the victory tour of all the districts in full. It would have expanded her world a little more and have made the Capitol privilege all the more apparent. I could be alone in that, though.

I am in some ways really excited for the films even though I didn't completely love the books. Maybe the director will change things for the better? I don't particularly care for some of the casting choices though, especially Gale and Peeta. Now Lenny Kravitz as Cinna? Yes please and thank you. I feel like there are a lot of places where the producers and director could go wrong (for instance, I'm underwhelmed by the pictures of the Capitol residents at this point), but I hope they nail it.

Did you do any other sort of review for The Hunger Games, Sab? I'd love to read your further thoughts. :)

No, sorry, this is the only one. ^_^* I wrote it because I'm becoming increasingly excited for the movies, and realized I hadn't written any reviews about the books.

As for the casting, I don't know, Josh Hutcherson will be all right, I think. He's got that nice boy, good kid vibe that Peeta needs. What's in question for me, I guess, is whether he can pull off the charismatic manipulation thing Peeta does (for a nice boy!). I don't know enough about the actor who plays Gale, but he's very... big. Isn't he? I mean, muscly for a guy who supposedly grew up in an impoverished District. :/ I always pictured the type of muscle Gale and Katniss to put on doing what they do as a leaner, sinewy type of muscle. That dude looks like a body builder. Or at least... way too tall and... big.

Lenny Kravtiz as Cinna, though, I am with you there. :D Yay!

I haven't seen any pictures of the Capitol residents! D: Let me guess, they're not nearly as bizarre as they should be, are they? When this is one of the most visual parts of the series; the bizarreness of the Capitol citizens serves as a very visual and immediate signal to the reader/viewer that these people are different from Katniss and Peeta.

Well, tell me a few things you'd like my thoughts on, and I can certainly provide them if I have them. ^_^ You might even make me think about things I haven't before. I have a tendency to not think about the same things other people think about when they're reading books (like the POV and tense... seriously, that was the majority of what I thought about while reading, and why it bothers me so much... it consistently threw me out of the story).

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, S! So here is an image of the Capitol residents. Definitely not nearly as crazy as I was expecting.

And here is what I thought after finishing the books, if you're interested. :)
