Time for another update because I have lots to share.
I’m teaching full-time now, and am starting to realize just how much teachers have to keep track of. We assign homework every night and do a graded warm-up activity everyday that means at least two things to grade for every class period…not to mention if they have a quiz. I could go on but I’ll spare the details.
Mrs. Richardson is now out of the room about 90% of the time, which I now really like since I’m able to control things and can be myself more. It’s been really good putting a lot of the theory I’ve learned into practice…partnership was good but this has been really rewarding in that sense.
One thing I really wish I could learn to control is laughing at comments that are meant to get me off track. I know the student games they’ll play and they sooo work. At least it’s not football season…
It’s crazy how many of my students remind me of other people I’ve gone/go to school with.
A really irritating thing that I can’t believe they do at Appomattox Middle is use the intercom to call students into the office, or to leave, or to go somewhere, or make announcements at random times during the day, etc. You use the intercom in elementary school ask the teacher to send a student to the office, not middle school…send a note with a student assistant in the office! And yes they’ll interrupt class time (almost daily) to make school-wide announcements (like softball practice has been cancelled, yearbook meeting after school) in the middle of the day, around lunch. Or, what really pisses teachers off is they’ll do it within the last 1.5 hours of school. Please, wait till 3:05 to make end-of-the-day announcements…faculty and staff will be much happier.
I can’t believe that I’m almost done with this placement…I have a feeling I’m really going to miss these kids when I go up to the 7th grade after everything I’ve heard from the teachers about how the 6th graders were last year. Although maybe, just maybe, I’ll experience eating lunch anywhere but the cafeteria, with the students. So far, it’s my impression that all 6th grade teachers in middle schools have to eat with the kids and supervise them.
The one aspect of AMS that I really really don’t like (and is an annoyance on a daily basis) is how oh-so friendly the custodians are...it’s just creepy.
School has already been delayed three times and cancelled twice. I will say that the days school is delayed is much more stressful because the schedule is all mixed up, classes aren’t the same length (genius people…genius), and you still have to cram in everything you were originally going to do. It’s nice having that extra hour of sleep and leaving at 9:00 instead of 7:00 but the day doesn’t really feel that much shorter…maybe it’s just me.
