Shopping, Bussing, Housing

I just got back from going to the grocery store. Somehow, the brief is never good enough nowadays--you always have to have run-ins with odd sorts of Lifedrama. Yes. One word, capitalized. My sister and I run into the store for macaroni, which seems like a relatively quick affair. We pay for our items and walk out. We both get into the backseat of the SUV, but just as I'm opening the backdoor, some complete stranger opens the front door and gets in.

"Hi," my mom says, acting like it's no big deal. "What's your name, again?"

Again. Clearly, she has interacted with this woman before.

"B--," she replies. "Thank you so much."

We drive across town to a hotel. B-- and my mother go into the hotel; my sister and I stay behind. After about 5-10 minutes, both my mom and B-- return. We head to a nearby motel, which we managed to book a night in for her. We watch her go into her room, and drive off. I didn't register it at the time, but it was eighty-four dollars. Eighty-four for one night in a sub-par place. My sister and I asked what was wrong with the first hotel, and she said that they wouldn't let the woman stay because she has "caused too many problems" in the past. What a terrible thing. We found that taking care of the needs of homeless persons can approach one at any time.

It's negative thirteen degrees Fahrenheit outside, and an eighty-four thousand cent hole in our pocket means that someone can stay in a warm place tonight.

I wish her all the best.
