Last year, I showed you some of the Junior High Sports festival. This time, some of the rehearsal from the Kasumigaseki Kita Elementary School sports festival! I think these pictures are far enough away that you can't clearly see their faces, and since the identity of the individual kids is not apparent, this should be okay to post.
The elementary school sports festival works a little differently from the Junior High festival. For one thing, there are only two teams instead of 3 or 4. For another, like the Junior High, they perform cheers as a team, but unlike the junior high, they also have performances by grade level. Also like the Junior High, they work really hard and put in a lot of time to prepare for their performances. I didn't get any pictures of the 1st or 2nd graders practicing, but here's a video of the 4th graders (and the 3rd graders? I'm not sure) performing the Soranbushi dance. It's a traditional athletic dance meant to imitate fishing. When I was in college, the exchange students did a rendition, so it was kind of exciting for me to see it again.

And once again, I will be randomly chanting "Dokkoisho! Dokkoisho! Soran soran!" for the next year or so.
The 6th-graders performance was this series of athletic stunts, lifts, and pyramids which was pretty impressive to watch. Here are some pictures of them practicing that.
Pretty cool huh? It did make me a bit nervous watching though. I mean, that's some hard ground down there, and they're not wearing helmets or padding or anything.
