Well, when I got in the office yesterday early morning to print stuff for the SIDHI meeting, Jeny was the only Research Associate there and I was the second person to get in. She suddenly burst into paranoia when she said:
"CK, dahil ikaw na lang ang nandito, sayo ko na lang masassabi."
I thought she was going to reveal that she's secretly commissioned by INTERPOL to watch my moves since I seem to have terroristic tendencies but apparently.
"Patay na si Heath Ledger!"
"OMG!"
I was never a hard-core fan, but I did enjoy the likes of Casanova and Ten Things I Hate About You. Oh, and how can I forget, everyone's favourite, Brokeback Mountain. Plus I love the fact that he's from Perth, Australia and went to Guildford Grammar School in his former years (I know this because there was someone during ESU who went to the same boarding school). The cause of his dead based on the autopsy remains unconclusive, but evidence on the scene shows that there were prescription drugs that could've indicated overdosage. But again, the toxicology report is still waiting final results.
With that being said, the next highlights of the day was watching Ishmael Bernal's Pagdating Sa Dulo. It was a really charmed film, I found it really amusing, and contrary to what the woman said in the entrance, it didn't seem very surreal to me. It was a sharp critique on the ideas of how people cope with their own poverties, be it physical and material deprivation, or the emotional neediness of the main characters. It was also a critique on the dilemma in the film industry: is film an art or should filmmaking be treated as a business? Do you give what the people want or do you impose your intellectual and moral platitudes to influence greater society at hand? Those were the two main themes. In terms of aesthetics, I looooove the costumes of the lead character, Ching. As in kahit na hindi tugma sa role niya (too classy beautiful instead of what the character dictates which is sleazy pokpok), I loved her dresses and her shoes!!! Ahk! And this was in 1971, and the acclaimed Bernal's first film.
The nicest part of the day is getting my UP Centennial Planner! Given, my copy isn't pristine, it's the content that counts. And the layout is actually v. pretty, if it weren't for the publishing malfunctions. So there, it's nice to be organised, and scarily, I might be changing my thesis topic last minute now. WAZ.
