Shige perched himself on the window ledge of the bedroom he shared with Ryo and pressed the side of his head on the cold glass pane, looking out. Even though it was July, the weather was uncharacteristically gloomy. Outside, it looked as though it was night, even though the clock on the bedside cabinet read “3pm”.

“Ryo,” he whispered, his breath fogging up the window. His lips twitched as a long finger reached up to draw the name in the condensation. “Where are you, Ryo-chan? You promised to be here today.” A small, melancholic smile graced his lips.

Suddenly, the room grew cold and Shige wrapped his arms around himself, trying to shield himself from the sudden drop in temperature.

Out of the blue, a blanket was draped around his shoulders and he looked up to see a tender-looking Nishikido Ryo smiling down at him. “Hey.”

“Ryo.”

The older man pushed his lover forward a little and sat down behind him, his arms pulling the university student to his chest.

“I thought you would be at work today,” Shige said after a moment.

“I thought you would be at school today,” he echoed.

“Class got cancelled - our professor couldn’t make it to the campus to take our class. What about you? Shouldn’t you be at the Agency?”

Ryo leaned forward and pressed soft kisses along Shige’s neck. Instinctively, Shige’s head rolled to the side, allowing Ryo more access, a soft moan escaping his barely parted lips as he did so.

Suddenly, fireworks exploded outside, lighting up the gloomy sky with their brilliance. Amidst the reds, greens, blues, pinks and every other colour imaginable was a clear golden message, highlighted by the inky darkness of the gloomy sky.

‘Happy birthday Shige!’

He couldn’t help but smile - the tug of the lip turning into a full out laugh until he had fallen off the window ledge and was kneeling on the floor, punching the wooden panels as a stream of tears rolled down his cheek and onto the floor. From where he was sitting, Ryo grinned, glad he had done at least one thing right today.

“Hey, Shige, let’s go out!”

The laughter died down slowly as the addressed boy pushed into a sitting position on the floor. “Eh?”

“Today’s special. Let’s go out.”

In the idol’s eyes, Shige looked adorable confused at what he was implying and it took all of Ryo’s self-restraint to stop from jumping him. “Huh?”

“It’s your birthday today,” he explained slowly, as though talking to a 5 year old, “so let’s do something special - let’s go out. We haven’t done that in a while, have we? The last time we did…” He couldn’t finish his sentence, the outcome of their last outing bring back horrible memories.

Still, Shige sat on the floor, unsure how to answer. The last time he remembered going out with Ryo was that time - the time when Ryo gave Akanishi far too much to drink - and he certainly did not want a repeat of that. But it was his birthday and he hadn’t been out with Ryo in such a long time…

“Okay.”

The idol gazed at Shige with a surprised look - as though he hadn’t expected him to answer him. “What?”

“I said, ‘Okay’ - let’s go out today, Ryo-chan.” Shige smiled a bright smile up at his boyfriend.

Mentally, Ryo rejoiced. Helping Shige up, he pulled the other out to the garage (pausing only to slip on their shoes and for him to open the car door) and they were off.

“Ryo?”

“Hm?”

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

Shige pouted. “You know I hate surprises.”

“You’ll like this.”

Shige didn’t press the matter further - he just sat patiently in the passenger seat as Ryo navigated them through the streets of Tokyo. They stopped outside a small, traditional looking Japanese restaurant tucked away on the outskirts of the city centre.

“Come on.”

He did as he was told and unbuckled himself, getting out of the car. The shorter man, who had pushed on a pair of sunglasses and pulled on a beanie, reached over for Shige’s hand and together, the two of them entered the restaurant.

“Nishikido-san?” the attendant behind the desk inquired. Ryo gave her a curt nod. “The others are here already - the usual room at the end.”

Shige was curious - ‘the others’?

Before he had time to ask, however, Ryo was pulling him through the empty hallway to the end, the function room he stood before dark.

“Are you sure-?”

Ryo slid the door open and pushed Shige into the room - and magically, the lights turned on.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”

Shige blinked. Party streamers were everywhere and a huge banner hung from one end of the room to the other, bearing the words ‘Happy Birthday Shige!’ in the same colour as the firework.

“What?”

Tegoshi bounced up to him and said, in the excited voice only Tegoshi could manage, “Ne, ne, Shige-kun, happy 21st birthday! You’re only a few months older than me!” And with that, the singer flung his arms around the birthday boy.

The Law student looked around. In one corner, there was a massive pile of presents of all different sizes and in the centre of the room, a large round table was set into the tatami mats, cushions lining the edge of the table. Seven of the ten cushions were already occupied - the 6 members of Kanjani8 grinned up at him, Ohkura the closest, Yasuda the furthest (and Shige suspected that Ryo had meddled with the seating arrangement), and Yamashita-kun was also smiling at him.

“Tegoshi, could you let Shige breathe?”

“Oops, sorry!” The boy flounced back into his cushion.

Dinner went by in a blur of mountains of delicious food Shige never dreamed he would ever taste, many, many birthday wishes and lots of present giving.

“Ryo-chan,” Shige began, when they were back in the car, heading back to the apartment, “thank you.”

He didn’t reply, but if the quirk of his lips were any indication, Shige knew he had heard him.
