Holy crap! I've seen this book before, but I always passed it over thinking it looked like one of those boring, bloodless "what a wonderful life I've led" type celebrity autobiographies. Was it Oscar Levant who said, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin"?

"Chinamen"? Oh, Doris! I never know how to recommend a book when it has racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia in it without sounding like I don't hate those things. "This is a great read, but it's really racist and offensive!" Maybe we need to invent a points system to warn people.

yeah, she also wrote about going to "the black ghetto" in her hometown of cincinnati after she was famous and, i dunno, it was kinda weird. she seems to be openminded enough, she just doesn't use very nice language, most of the time. i gotta say, it's a helluva book, if you can look past that stuff.

i guess dale evans has hardened me to the racism of hollywood, or something.

i suppose it's not a huge leap from christian science to veganism and such, when you think about it.

I actually own that but have not gotten around to reading it. I just want to know where she came up with the name Clara Bixby....how odd...

P.S.
Yes, Joan Crawford was a Christian Scientist as well. Joan and Doris have a lot of similarities that it's freaky. I got the following info from www.joancrawfordbest.com

"both followed Christian Science beliefs, both were Aries, both had 4 husbands, both started as dancers...oh, and both appeared in blackface in a movie! also both appeared in a movie with "Happened" and "Jane" in the title; we all know Joan's, and Doris's was 1959's It Happened to Jane---playing Doris's daughter in this movie was none other than the girl who played "Blanche Hudson" as a child, Gina Gillespie! Spooooooky!)"
