“OH MY GOD,” Gwen´s voice came from her desk, loud enough for everyone in the Hub to hear as she watched her screen with shocked disbelief and awestruck eyes.
“What?” Owen asked poking his head from behind his workstation to look across to Gwen´s who was looking as if she´d seen, not a ghost, but something just as disbelieving.
“Oh God, you guys. Come check this out,” Gwen said rewinding the film and her jaw dropped a little bit more as she paused it, so Tosh and Owen got to her sides and they were all staring at the monitors.
“So- you caught Jack and Ianto going at it, again? But this time they forgot to delete the CCTV footage? We should sell this to some website, that should teach them a lesson,” Owen said mischievously, “Or make them believe we did,” He grinned to himself and wrapped both his arms around his chest.
“No, is not that!” Gwen exclaimed and hit ´play´
The footage wasn’t from Jack’s CCTV office, as that one had being erased, which was no surprise really, but this was from a different angle that showed through the glass panels on Jack´s office and the images were just as clear.
“You´ve got to be shitting me,” Owen muttered whilst Tosh watched at the footage silently.
“Did anyone see them leaving earlier?” Gwen enquired. “Noticed something ´different´?”
“No, they were acting normal, and everything was fine. Just like an average day. They went Weevil hunting,” Tosh said trying to keep her voice even, because that was by now, amusing.
How often could they go Weevil hunting to come back with no Weevils at all?
“I think they go Weevil hunting to Ianto´s flat,” Owen said quietly whilst re-watching the footage.
“Want me to track them down?” Tosh asked, and the look the other two gave her was enough for them all to hurry to Tosh´s workstation who started following Jack and Ianto since they left the Hub until finding them, present time at the Bay? Having, lunch?
“Oh, that’s just not fair, why do we stay in, and they go have lunch?!” Owen complained.
“They barely ever leave the Hub, we go home at nights, but as far as we know, well, Ianto is always here, and so is Jack,” Tosh looked at Owen. “It was always like that, even before…”
“They started shagging.”
“Yeah,” Tosh said focusing on the screen again and she started feeling bad she was intruding on something that should be private, though she had to admit she was a little bit shocked. What they’ve seen… she would have never imagined it.
“I guess, you do have a point Tosh,” Owen said watching the image of his boss and Ianto having a comfortable lunch by the Bay at a table on the terrace of the restaurant.
Ianto was laughing along with Jack, probably to one of Jack´s many stories or antics and they looked sickenly in love. At least, that was the one way Owen had to put it right this moment.
“I´ll get cavities just from what I´ve seen,” Owen said going back to his workstation and to his puzzle.
“But you think?” Gwen asked looking over her shoulder to the doctor who was focussed on yesterday’s newspaper puzzle word.
“It wouldn’t be a surprise,” Tosh said stopping the CCTV on that area from tracking them. She thought they needed some privacy after all.
“Not for some, at least,” Owen added when noticing Gwen was still looking awestruck.
“You alright?” Tosh asked, Gwen who turned to look at her.
“I’m just surprised, I mean- it’s not something I would have seen coming…” Gwen admitted and frowned a little.
“Is this the time we need to remind you, you are Mrs Williams now?” Owen asked and there was a little grin, lingering on the corner of his eyes, because he was the one who cared the least about that. At least he hadn’t cared before, not one bit… now it was rather different, Rhys was a good bloke, he got to know him a little better and seriously, it wasn’t easy to put up with Gwen, the man was a living Saint.
“Oh sod off Owen,” Gwen hissed and chewed her lower lip, “It wasn´t that, I’m just shocked because I really didn´t see it coming, sure they’re ‘together’ and all, but this? Is… I don´t know.”
“What about I make you some tea?” Tosh offered and smiled.
“Alright, yeah I could use a tea,” Gwen frowned a little, though she followed Tosh to Ianto´s coffee station whilst considering what she’s seen, “Jack´s going to get his heart broken, all over again,” She said quietly and locked eyes with Tosh when the other woman looked up after she spoke.
“What are hearts for? If not for getting them broken after you found someone to love?” Tosh asked with a little shrug, “There is a well known saying; ‘Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
“Quite true,” Gwen agreed, and smiled when Tosh handed her over a mug with steamy tea, “Thanks Tosh.”
“You´re welcome,” She said and blew over the surface of her own mug.
“Tosh,” Owen´s voice called out from where he was sitting, “coffee?”
“PLEASE?” Gwen added rolling her eyes big time.
“Pleeeeeeease?” Owen added mocking Gwen who snickered.
“Will instant do?” Tosh asked back and when Owen said ´anything with caffeine´ she started preparing him some until they were all down, talking about Jack and Ianto and what they could ´foresee´ for them both.
The cog door opened drawing three pairs of eyes to it.
Jack and Ianto stood put as they noticed the team staring at them, Gwen’s inquisitive look, already waiting for them to spill whatever they were up to, Owen looking mischievous and amused whilst Tosh was smiling at them softly.
“Anything you two want to share with the rest of the team?” Gwen asked and looked from one to the other.
Jack looked at them all and frowned a little before waving his hands in the air, did Gwen have to be on top of the gossip ALL times?
“Well?”
“I thought you deleted the CCTV footage,” Jack muttered looking at Ianto.
“Actually, I um, saved it on DVD,” Ianto admitted biting his lower lip, “Nowhere to be found though,” he added as quietly as possible.
Jack smiled with amusement at Ianto, because he didn’t see him much as the romantic type, and looked at Gwen whose eyes were piercing through them both, “Alright, yes. What you saw, I am guessing from…” he looked around.
“That one,” Ianto pointed out to a camera that showed to Jack´s office.
“That camera happened. No, you are not crazy, now can we all go back to work?”
“Or the word puzzle,” Owen said chewing his pen, “I’ve got a C and an A… and an R…”
“Cloridate,” Ianto said with out hesitation, Owen looked up at him with a slightly weirded out face and the Welshman smiled, “I did that one mentally yesterday when you all went for lunch,” He said simply and moved to gather the mugs.
“Why wouldn’t you tell us?” Gwen demanded, and got Ianto´s hand to wave it in the air, where a tasteful titanium band was decorating the ´one´ finger that had ´that´ meaning.
Ianto tried getting his hand back, but Gwen was grabbing it quite stubbornly so he just let her hold it and flashing it around, “Jack, I need my hand back,” He said looking at his lover.
“Alright, it’s just rings. Not big a deal. See? I’ve got one too. Happy?” He asked Gwen flashing his own ring now and smiled at her softly.
“But why weren’t you going to tell us?”
“We were, we just- wanted it to be our thing for a little while,” Jack shrugged, and made a mental note to move the CCTV camera angle.
“It’s not like we weren’t going to notice mate,” Owen said from where he was scribbling on the newspaper.
“So you two engaged now?” Gwen enquired.
“I believe, we just ´are´ Gwen.” Ianto said patiently gathering the mugs that had been used in their absence because Gwen had stopped waving his hand in the air, something he was most grateful for, “No further plans, other than this. No need to put on a label to it,” He said simply and took the mugs to the coffee station.
“So, you propose, on one knee, give him the ring and you’re not going to go along with the rest?” She enquired looking at Jack pointedly.
Jack felt like taking a step back and stuffed his hands in his pockets whilst frowning a little bit, even though he was amused, Gwen was making him actually consider it. “Ianto?”
“Jack?”
“Want to get married? Or- however they call it now a days?”
“I’m quite happy with our current agreement.”
“Ianto!” Gwen groaned, and almost stomped her foot down though the Welshman chuckling at her didn’t help and so she crossed her arms over her chest.
“Sorry Gwen but this works for us as it is. We don’t need more,” The young Welshman said patiently, walking back to where everyone was standing and stood next to Jack.
Jack smiled at Ianto thankfully, and looked at Gwen, “We can still go to the pub and celebrate,” he offered knowing Gwen didn’t actually get it, because she probably thought everyone deserved one proper weeding, but still- with Ianto, it wasn’t like that. Was it?
Now Jack was curious about it, was Ianto saying this just so Jack wouldn’t go through the trouble and processing of getting ´married´ or because he really didn’t need it?
He remembered when they had been driving to Gwen’s, Ianto had explained to him the ´happy couple chose a distant place because, they wanted everything to be perfect.´ So, Ianto knew their wedding could very easily go wrong? Or he really didn’t see the point of it?
Jack didn’t see the point of it really; it was just a ceremony, something social. As far as he was concerned he was more than happy to know Ianto had agreed to spend the rest of his live with him… the rings were a plus, a tiny thing for them to wear, to remember each other by when they were apart, something to remind them about their commitment, it was about themselves choosing this, not about everyone knowing about them being a couple.
“Count me in,” Owen said; always ready to go to the pub.
“Me too, this is something we should celebrate,” Tosh said looking from Jack to Ianto, “Congratulations to you both,” She added politely, just happy her friends were happy together, whatever their agreement was.
“Thank you Tosh,” Ianto said honestly, and smiled at her kindly whilst Jack beamed her way and nodded his thanks too.
“I´m in too, I just really- don’t understand why you´d exchange rings and propose and then- just, do nothing,” Gwen complained.
Jack moved closer and wrapped an arm around Gwen’s shoulders in a reassuring manner, “Might be a guy’s thing,” He said squeezing her gently against his own body.
“I´ve got a couple gay friends that got married,” She pointed out looking up whilst sulking at Jack.
Jack thought in pointing out they weren’t gay, there they went once again with their labels, but it was Gwen, it was better to just smile, “I suggest you pester Ianto if you´re thinking we should go for a wedding or really, what is the name for it?”
“Civil partnership, I believe,” Tosh chirped from her place and beamed at Ianto who brought her a mug with steamy coffee, “Thanks.” She said before watching him leaving a mug on Owen´s desk.
“That,” Jack added, “I asked, Ianto said he was fine, so the way I see it, HE doesn´t want to marry me,” He pointed out and grinned with amusement when Ianto glared at him, as if saying ´Thank you´ for throwing the ball to my side of the court, “You should be telling him off, not me,” The Captain added and almost chuckled when Gwen started giving Ianto a mild glare with a determined look as Ianto himself was now trying very hard not to glare at Jack. The Captain knew the Welshman well enough to know Ianto was mentally ´thanking´ him now.
Jack kissed Gwen on her head, and made his way towards his office, “Ianto, coffee please?” He called out and gave his lover an innocent smile.
The Captain watched Ianto nodding at him just a couple seconds before Gwen started following him towards the coffee machine and started talking to him.
Once in his office, Jack looked towards them and chuckled when he noticed Ianto trying his best in being patient with Gwen, and boy, was he patient! But Jack knew Gwen got on his nerves from time to time.
He was probably going to be drinking decaf for the rest of the day now.
Once Jack and Ianto were back from the pub, Jack noticed Ianto was slightly tipsy so he helped him with his clothes. It had taken him a little bit of time to convince Ianto to have a couple more beers than he would normally do, which was no more than one before he stuck to non alcoholic drinks, and he smiled when he noticed he was staying still as Jack kept on undressing him.
Pushing him back onto the bed Ianto had recently put down there for them both, Jack stripped himself and got under the sheets. It didn´t take much for Ianto to roll and snuggle up, probably less than a second and Jack held him close and safely in his arms.
“Hmm.”
Jack heard the Welshman purr and smiled to himself whilst resting his cheek against Ianto´s head, “In a one to ten scale, how wasted are you?”
“I´d say,” the Welshman´s voice was slightly slurred, “Hmm, five point five?”
“Could’ve being worse.”
“Yeah.”
“Tell me something Ianto,” Jack started, stroking his hand against the other´s spine, “Are you really ok with this?”
“You´re going to have to be more specific Jack. Being us, ´this´ can refer to an endless list of things I am not up for trying to decipher whilst being five point five wasted, and about to fall asleep on you,” Ianto yawned into his hand and settled again.
“The marriage thing. You ok without actually doing the civil partnership thing? Or are you just saying you don´t want it because you know I don’t really see the point in it?” The Captain asked curiously though seriously.
“Both.”
The reply came quick and simple, so Jack hummed softly to himself, “Would you like to?”
“Jack, was Gwen going on about it all night? Like she tried to with me whilst the time I was trying to get some work done?” Ianto asked.
Noticing Ianto rested his weight on one shoulder to face him, Jack shock his head. “No, but there was something you said when it was her wedding that made me wonder,” He admitted and noticed the puzzlement in Ianto´s eyes as he said that.
“This is why I don’t drink more than one or two beers when I go out,” Ianto muttered.
“You said in a rather passionate way, subtle but passionate, that the couple that was intended to marry, chose a secluded area because they wanted everything to go perfect.”
“Yeah…”
“So, you don’t want to try a ceremony because you’re scared it’ll go bad? Or you really don’t see the point of it?” Watching Ianto, looking back at him intently Jack shifted a little on his bed to face him, “If it would have been Lisa, you would have married her wouldn´t you?”
“That was different.”
“Why? Because she was a girl?”
“No, well yes, but no,” Ianto frowned.
“Then?”
“Jack, you want to have the ceremony?”
The forward words made Jack frown a little and he actually considered it. He had stated before he didn´t see the point and had mocked the whole thing, saying there was a double meaning to it when it came to a marriage but now…
“I don´t think this is really about me. If you want to we can. I just thought you wouldn´t be interested in it.”
“You´d do it because I would want to do it? That´s not what I want…”
“You´re making me feel lost, and that’s not an easy thing to achieve.”
Jack sighed deeply and dropped his head on the pillows feeling frustrated he couldn’t put things the right way. He had gotten married before, a couple times actually. He had been monogamous and all, marriage, party, the whole thing with people he had loved yes, but not as much as he did Ianto. So in a way, it did make sense he actually got as serious as one could possibly get in this century with the man he loved. Even if they were going to outlive said century.
The Captain felt Ianto wrapping his arm around his chest and looked down as Ianto rested his chin on his chest.
Lifting his head, Jack rested his own head on his arm and looked down at Ianto in the eyes, trying to read them, trying to extricate whatever was going through the Welshman’s mind at the moment.
“I don´t need a piece of paper to tell us what we have,” Ianto´s voice was quiet and soothing as his hand rubbed over Jack´s chest.
“No?”
“No. As much as a fan as I am of certificates and other sorts of documents, I don’t need one to tell the world you love me and that I love you. From a practical point of view it would be of no use either of us. If either of us were to die before the other, then whatever we might have - which isn´t much considering we live at the Hub and we work for Torchwood - would go into storage. So it would still be just a piece of paper.”
“It would be sort of romantic though…” Jack mused out loud and frowned a little when Ianto chuckled.
“I swear, sometimes the tide, is even more predictable than what you can be! When it was Gwen´s weeding you kept on telling me you didn´t get those rituals all too much even though you did married in the past. Now, you actually consider it!”
“Is just, in the past it made some sort of sense for the people I was with, it was important to them. So, I went along with it and married. I wanted to make them happy,” Jack explained and stroked his fingers through Ianto´s hair, “With you, I just want you all to myself,” He admitted and smiled when feeling the other’s lips pressing a kiss to his own.
“You have me all to yourself, papers or not, you do.”
Jack grinned impishly at that, feeling like a greedy kid who was granted the most wanted toy and brought Ianto closer to himself for a kiss, “Good,” he whispered to Ianto´s lips as he kept on kissing him lazily, lovingly.
“You surprise me though, I never thought of you as the jealous type.”
“I never really was,” Jack said to Ianto´s lips as his tongue made it’s way into the other’s mouth to massage the Welshman’s in a passionate kiss, “Until I started getting, serious with you.”
“I like this new side of you.”
“Hmm, bet you do. Just wait until I start telling anyone who puts their eyes on you to fuck off,” Jack smiled into the kiss, “Won´t be so fun then. But you´re all mine, so you’ve not got much of a choice.”
“Oh don´t I?”
“No,” Jack grinned and sucked on Ianto´s lower lip.
“Hmm, I was really hoping I could get some sleep,” Ianto groaned softly.
“Want me to stop?”
“No.”
“Good,” Jack said and pulling Ianto on top of him. He welcomed him between his legs, his arms wrapping around his back whilst his thigh rubbed against Ianto´s and his hands stroked the faint muscles on Ianto´s back before groping his backside.
