Brokeback Mountain

Jan 15, 2006 22:08

Went and saw this, finally, with SO today. I enjoyed it a great deal - in part because of the scenery, which is perhaps odd, but I spent enough of my childhood summers in the Rockies that I love these vistas. Not going to write a proper review of it. But have a few related thoughts to put down, mostly on the aspect of sexuality at this time.

Miscellaneous ideas... some spoilers )

reviews, deep thoughts

I had not read the story before I saw the film; just finished reading it a few minutes ago, in fact. Some elements of the film are much clearer now; some powerful visuals now are in context for me.

I felt like they put that stuff in the movie to make their first coupling more understandable or palatable...
Good point! Jake Jack comes rolling up like Sex-On-A-Stick; gives poor Ennis one long look, and next thing you know, he's ditchin' the stubble! I don't think he was doing it to impress the boss with his hygiene.

...in the written story, there is nothing about Jack acting in that sort of manner.

Very true! In the story, that first coupling comes out of nowhere(other than Jack warming his hand on Ennis). The film had a bit of boyish flirtyness, as I recall. I had always imagined that Jake Jack would have been the top, at least the first time; I was completely stunned by what I saw, and had to do some quick work on my preconcieved ideas.

why else was he puking after they left one another? Shame? Guilt? I didn't feel at point, as a viewer, that I bought the depth of their feelings for each other. I think now, with having thought about the film overnight, and reading the story, and very valuable discussions like this one, I'm continuing to digest and process it all.

It's funny, I almost feel like a family member (though they apparently didn't have any family members to serve as witnesses or greek chorus); thinking back on what I should have seen, should have noticed, should have understood.

I did think so when I saw it - before it became clear that he'd worked for this guy before. Even then I figured he did it to try to be assigned the camp rather than up with the sheep. Now, in retrospect, I wonder. But Jack would really have no reason to think that Ennis might go for anything with him at all.

That comment reminds me that when I saw the scene, I did not assume that they were engaging in anal sex. It looked more like intercrural sex to me, frankly (I mean, come on, one little bit of spit? OUCH!); though reading the story later I saw that the author specified it as anal (and OUCH again). But the film shot is IMO pretty ambiguous.

Hey, I'm a slash reader and writer, and I still thought it was ambiguous. *g* Actually I liked that it was... given that I've been writing at an R level lately, which is a lot tougher in some ways than just going for the really graphic stuff.

In the written story I felt it was fairly explicit why he was puking.
Yes, in the story it was; I noticed that particularly because of Cel's comment last night.

I'll look for that other review! shrinetolust (whose username I adore) had a very nice review also, with pictures. Lots of them.
