Cool

Just finished reading a couple of books on the Permian/Triassic extinction: Gorgon: Paleontology, Obsession, and the Greatest Catastrophe in Earth's History, by Peter D. Ward, and When Life Nearly Died: The Greatest Mass Extinction of All Time, by Michael J. Benton. Both (obviously) totally out of my field of study, but amazing stuff. I'd known a bit in general about the Cretaceous/Tertiary extinction - the end of the dinosaurs - but I'd not known about the P/T one, which was actually much more substantial. 251 million years ago or so, and perhaps 90% of all species of life on the planet were obliterated. It's not yet clear just what the cause was, although the authors lay out various theories. Absolutely fascinating.

SO is somewhat envious that I found/took time to read these - he's desperately trying to finish up several things before leaving Saturday morning for 6 weeks in Sweden and Ireland - but as I pointed out, he finds time to listen to the news on the radio, and I don't do that. We can only do so much, each of us!

Dinner with his colleagues tonight was good. The calzones were really interesting and tasty, and we have a couple left so dinner tomorrow night is mostly taken care of. I'll probably write up and post that recipe one of these days.

deep thoughts, science
