Thanks so much for considering an older dog rather than a puppy. You'll know if the time is right, but I do know that our dog always got along best when he had friends in the neighborhood, so perhaps it might be a good idea?
Given the context, I am truly tickled by the fact that, to comment, I have to click a "Speak" link. Sounds like something you'd train Juno to do.
LOL, she does bark some now (when we first got her she did not), but we have not trained her to speak on command.
We strongly prefer to get a non-puppy. Juno was about a year and a half when we got her and that was much better for us. Puppies are cute but they take more effort, usually, and older dogs are less likely to be adopted, so yeah. Also this one has black fur, or mostly black (only headshots on the web page, so hard to tell) and apparently black dogs are less likely to be adopted too.
I know black cats are less likely to be adopted because of superstitions, but black dogs too? I hadn't heard that, and it's actually kind of fascinating. But... no, not googling that to find out more because this dissertation proposal really must get out by tomorrow. That just might be my treat for when I'm done, though. (Good girl, Marta! Stay...)
The one concern I'd have with adopting an older dog is if she hadn't been trained properly, you'd have to unlearn the dog's bad habits which seems like it could be difficult. But I'm not sure it's that much harder than training them well the first time.
