In Need of Your Opinion

So, my computer is a little over five years old. Freaks out from time to time. And is overall showing it's age. I was talking to my mom about my desire to get a new computer. Preferably a laptop, which means I could keep my desktop and have room for a desktop ( Read more... )

i'm sort of against technology. so, i would ask myself "What do i need a computer for?" if the answer is "word, the internet, and storing shit", then i would just get a decent laptop that can handle the job. that way, you won't feel guilty about (A) Your parents buying it for you & (B) Upgrading in the future, when robots take over the planet.

that's a tough one. i would say depending on when you last used a mac, it's probably better. and it's not your expense if they're going to buy it for you. my instinct is if they asked what you want and offered to buy it for you, then they probably want to get you what you want. if they can afford it and it makes them happy, then i would let them do it. someday you will return the sentiment, even if it's not a trip to paris. you're probably going to wind up nursing them in their old age. i HATE PC's. i hate microsoft software. and i love my mac. it was worth the 1500 i didn't really have at the time :)

Why you want an iBook wantstoshine November 28 2005, 20:22:19 UTC
You don't need to be a designer, engineer, etc to appreciate the subtle complexities of a Mac. In my ever so humble opinion, they're just better machines. Namely, as of now, you don't have to worry about getting bogged down with spyware and viruses. Now, I realize the e-world is ever evolving and even this could change, but I don't think it will in the near future. Of the friends of mine who bought PC laptops around the same time as I purchased my iBook, they've all had to take theirs in/send them away for various repairs, upgrades, cleanings, etc. The only problem I've run into with mine was that whole powercord-catching-on-fire thing. And Apple replaced it, no questions asked ( ... )

If I was going to buy a computer for general use, and not for the geeky stuff that I do, I would buy a MAC. They're really not overpriced if you compare it to a quality pc laptop.

It really comes down to:

how well do you like the mac os
do you have any old software that you want to keep
do you want any geeky high tech features that an ibook doesn't offer

Also, Word can save in multiple formats, including older versions of word and works.

Laura hates microsoft software, yet she has microsoft office suite on her powerbook ;)

I know this is way belated and may be a moot point by now, but here's the thing... I'm often a bit reticent to ask my parents for money because I feel that part of being independent is being totally financially independent. And I am not good at accepting help from people when I can't reciprocate in kind. But what my mom said, in response to all of this and my guilt and worry is that it's much easier (and more fun) for her and Dad to give me things that make my life easier and better and are things that I want. She pointed out that I am being intelligent about my finances and am being independent -- if they couldn't help, I'd go without a lot of things, but I'd still have somewhere to live and food to eat and so on and so forth. But since they can, they take great pleasure in doing so ( ... )
