Summary: As inspired by
thebattycakes posting older fics, I wrote this for
ashenkey back in February as she wanted some Kait and Sam being sweet together. This is the fic where they find their way back together and try to understand who they are now and what being together looks like with all their new scars. Its been sitting done for a while and I thought it was time to share it.

Kait woke when Sameth stirred and she smelled fear on him, she opened her eyes as he twitched but nothing else. She hadn’t forgotten his nightmares, just hers had been greater and it had been a long time since she slept beside him. This night was simply sleeping, she had considered more but he had gone back to being awkward but sleep won out. He really needed taking care of as from what he told her of his days, unless he had somewhere he had to be then he worked. She propped herself up on his solid chest, nightshirted chest and looked at him. He had changed, he had settled into himself, there wasn’t that weight of worry on him as there had been before, though he did have new scars. One of them was on his thigh, she’d convinced him to put on his nightshirt and had seen the puckering of skin, something she had missed. They’d missed so much of each other lives.

She traced the Mark on his forehead and felt the warmth of its magic go through her fingers. It was a kind magic though not an easy one, but then magic wasn’t meant to be simple or easy. The Charter seemed to live more than other magics, she would have to learn more as it might be her future. Though tonight wasn’t the night to think of that, the Old Kingdom was an option, this night was an experiment and a return. She hadn’t expected to want to be in his arms again, too much had changed, but this was comfortable. He had always been safe, because he didn’t expect everything to turn around him. In his eyes, she saw that he thought of more and there were points she could smell the desire on him, but he held back.

The way he watched her reminded her of when she had watched him work, how he looked at the metal, trying to understand how to bend it, but not break it. Her world had decided she wasn’t part of it anymore and she had become someone different from the girl who worried about the state of her knives. Living and loving made more sense now, the only way to heal was to go forward and honor herself and all that she was. He shifted, reaching out for something and she caught his hand and whispered, “Shh, Sam, you’re safe.”

Now he woke and blinked at her, “Oh, sorry.”

“For what? Dreaming?”

In the darkness, she couldn’t catch his expression but there was glint of a smile as he asked, “Is that what woke you?”

“Do I have to be woken?” She teased and watched how his look seemed to shift in the darkness as he reached out to move her hair that had drifted down into her face, “I don’t know. Before you were a heavy sleeper and I was the one with all the nightmares.”

“You still have nightmares.”

“Yes, I don’t know if I’ll ever stop having them, they’re in my blood.”

“Bah, blood,” She’d forgotten how easily he apologized and she could see the words forming in his mouth so she kissed him, enjoying that moment when he accepted and joined with her. He brought her down to his chest, his hand gentle in her hair as he kissed her, he’s still a fine kisser, then he stopped. It wasn’t time for him to stop and she kissed him, fitting her body to his, feeling the heat of him through her body.

“Kait,” The longing was rising off of him and she wanted that, he’s always wanted her for her and his hands have stayed in her hair and on her back. Her next kiss is slow as she reached up to take the hand on her back and move it lower to rest on her backside, not far from where her shift was starting to ride up. He clutched at her and she smiles into his mouth as she begins to trace the strong lines of his body until he groans, “Kait, are you sure?”

“Oh, Sam, I’ve missed you. Yes, I know exactly what I want and I will tell you and show you. And you are not going to worry about anything but tonight,” She explained to him with a smile as she traced the new scar on his thigh and her hand drifted up his thigh.

His groan and laugh warmed her as he said, “I will. I’m yours to command.”

Kait lets her hand move slowly up his body, she’s going to control his desire tonight and see that they both are pleased, “Then no more words.”

She kissed him, as her hand explored him and his went over the contours of her body, as if he was remembering how she felt. Everything was slow, she led his hands and she drew him towards her until he was inside her. He’d remembered some things from before they pulled apart, where she liked to be touched and how so that she came quicker than she expected after drawing out his climax. Then she moved slowly off of him to rest in his arms once again and felt his gaze on her, “What are you doing?”

“Just looking at you.”

“Am I so different?”

He didn’t answer her at first, but moved his hand against her cheek, “Yes and no. Kait, thank you.”

She opened her mouth to point out that he had no reason to thank her when he kissed her, gently and carefully before holding her.
