Getting Things Right

Jun 26, 2011 16:59

I just wrote a post on my librarian blog over here on the Book Festival. It was a great learning experience and just the kind of thing I really hope to keep doing. By the end of the day, I was incredibly worn out but felt proud and good, if I can organize things like that in my career, I'll be happy.

I've finished syncing all my files to Dropbox and moved my big laptop off my desk so my new small one is now sitting on my desk. My chair is reaching the point where its just making my back hurt and I think I'm going to do some shopping possibly on Tuesday to find a new thing to hold my paperwork and a new desk chair.

I still need to reset my wireless so it works with my new computer, I've never done it before so I'm a little nervous about that. My next two weeks are going to be quite relaxing due to the mid semester break and the fourth of July, I'm hoping to get a lot of writing done. I need to start on a draft of my grant and I have many OOMs that I want to get done or started.

In simple and happy news, I love my igneuitea, its so easy. And I started The Corinthian today and promptly read about sixty pages, I'm so glad there's so much Heyer for me to read. I think I'm going to end up tossing Pen into Mixed Muses at some point as she's charming and wonderful though if I do, she can't meet my Jane Austen. I might have to write fic.

Now I'm going to do the next two rounds of the question meme.
Comment with "Come at me, bro," and:
→ I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
→ Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
→ Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

First from moofoot

Name four foods you can't live without, and why you enjoy them so much!
-Toast with jam or nutella on it, this is one of my favorite comfort foods, you can eat it any time of day and it makes you feel better.

-Sweet potatoes, it doesn't matter what form as I just love them. Maybe tonight I'll make some sweet potato fries.

-Yogurt, it goes with everything and can be used as a marinade base, something to mix with fresh fruit for dessert or make a sauce out of it. One of my treats when I go out to Indian restaurants is to order lassi as I love the texture.

-Lamb, I'm such a meat eater but I love the leanness and variety of lamb. Since I'm on my own and can't afford it, I don't eat it that much but there are so many things to do with it. Also it makes me think of living in New Zealand and Greece where its cheaper and a real staple.

I know you're a major tea drinker; what is it about the brewed beverage that you find so appealing?
I've been mulling over this question for a while and realized its sort of a chicken and the egg thing for me. I've always liked tea and not liked coffee, but I think I didn't really get into tea until living in New Zealand. My mother adores tea but also likes coffee, so I grew up in a house with lots of tea varieties. It wasn't until I was living in New Zealand where for under three bucks at any cafe, you can get a proper pot of tea that it became what I drink.

Top five bands/artists/groups? Have you seen any or all of them live? Where and when? How was the show?
I sadly haven't been to as many shows as I'd like for all that I love music and this is a hard group to rank and name. So this is the current list, it might change tomorrow.
-The Punch Brothers and the show we saw at the Ark in Ann Arbor, I want to see them again.
-The Dubliners, their music makes me happy and I saw the concert that opened their 40 years tour in Dublin in 2002. I went to that concert on a lark while I was visiting Ireland after my semester abroad and it was amazing. I only wish I'd been staying closer so I could have stayed for the encores. My B&B was in the suburbs so I had to rush across town to catch a bus. That's still one of my favorite concerts ever though weirdly I wasn't able to buy the CD until I was in the US since the ATM on Grafton Street wasn't working and then I had to buy it from amazon.co.uk.
-Jakob Dylan, lately his music has been a soundtrack for me and I would love to see him perform someday.
-Roseanne Cash, I kind of stumbled into her music and I follow her on Twitter and she's someone I would love to see. Her music always gets to me in some way.
-Gomez, part of this is that they're the music the flatmate I wished I'd properly asked out got me hooked on and whenever I listen to them I think of him and New Zealand. I haven't seen them but would love to.

What was your favorite vacation as a kid?
Visiting my mother's family in California, when I was growing up we'd go for about two weeks every summer. Sometimes it was just my mom and me and sometimes my dad would come along. We'd fly into San Francisco, one of my favorite airports and visit my great aunt Ruth who had a tiny apartment on the Embarcadero. She died when she was 103 and I want to be her when I grow up. Then we'd drive down to Carmel and stay in my family's place in town, my grandfather and his father built a mini apartment complex that my grandmother lived in and rented out places. There was this incredible garden out front and we could walk into downtown. My uncle is still running it, but its been too long since I've been there. We'd also visit with my Uncle and Aunt and cousin, who just got married and is a few years older than I am. When we were younger, we'd play with his gigantic lego collection and other silly things. Sadly we've grown apart as the years have gone on since I haven't visited the West Coast regularly. Even though it would be hard to be far apart from my growing nieces, I'd love to live on the West Coast someday, its part of who I am.

If you could have one talent that you currently don't, what would it be and why?
There are two answers to this, yesterday reminded me that the visual art I'm good at is photography not drawing but still made me wish I was better. Though I think the one I've always craved is the ability to really sing. I've got a decent voice but I'm not confident with it like I am with acting or things like that. Whenever I did theater when I was younger, I knew my voice was only good for chorus work and not even that good for it.

And in an odd way of coming round to the beginning, questions from austen.

1. You've just spent the night in jail with one of your favorite fictional characters? Who is it and what did you do to earn yourself a night behind bars?
Will Scarlett and we had a night drinking on the town and he ended up getting in a fight with someone and I tried to separate them. It ended badly, but you should see the other guy.

2. What's a movie you never get sick of, no matter how many times you watch it?
Newsies, I could probably recite that movie since I've been watching it since I was in elementary or middle school. I honestly don't remember when I first watched it but I rewatched it last night and it made me grin and beam and dance. Also I have the soundtrack and it always makes me happy.

3. You have a chance to travel forwards or backwards in time. Where do you travel to?
I think I'd like to travel back to Philadelphia around 1776 and hopefully get a chance to talk to some of the Founders.

4. If you could visit one city right now, all expenses paid, where would you go?
Seattle, my best friend since we were tiny is there and its been too long since we visited. Also there are Milliways' folks there that I've never met and my Aunt and Uncle and its a great city. I'm so glad that I get to go to California for my brother's wedding this August as I've been having a West Coast yearning lately.

5. Who was your first celebrity crush?
I'm not sure if I can remember the first, first one, but Jonathan Brandis was the first celebrity I ever wrote a fan letter to. It was after seeing him in this TV movie about Good King Wencelas, I liked him in Seaquest too but that movie prompted me to write a letter. I don't think I ever sent it.
