In the latest installment of my life, I took an overnight Greyhound from Orlando to Durham, NC -- the closest stop to Chapel Hill, where Liz goes to grad school. While in Chapel Hill, you must go by Open Eye Cafe, scene of many events in my life, and Weaver Street Market-- both are technically in Carrboro, but you accidentally end up in Carrboro just by walking down Franklin Street for a while. I also recommend Pepper's Pizza, which is on Franklin Street, and their amazing gigantic calzones. Also, Loco Pops-- a little further west on Franklin St., and tucked back in a corner, behind Penang.
For you vintage shopping needs, across the street is Time after Time, and if you want to learn about local anarchist politics, go to the Internationalist Bookstore and grab some of the free zines.
My favorite bars, if you're interested, are Fuse (on Rosemary St.) and Souther Rail, which is right next to Weaver Street, in the train cars (they have a lovely vinho verde as one of their house wines, and they serve tater tots as a bar snack.)
On the cheap as in free side, there's the Ackland Art Museum, which has a good collection for a little college town. And you can sit around campus and ponder why college students at UNC look so different from college students at Sarah Lawrence (it has something to do with make-up, I think.)
Have fun! Glad to hear you've felt safe on Greyhound-- Geoff took it from New York to Durham once, and had a horrible experience. He said the bus station around D.C. was really bad at night-- I don't know if you've gone through there yet. If you haven't, you might want to avoid it.
