holy shit death cab for cutie is fucking awesome. so jake and i rode marta to the dome station. kinda got lost coming out cuz it was adifferent exit than the one i usually go into but we found our way. went in, found a spot on the lower balcony after one girl sitting alone with a seat next to her got up and offered us the seats. so we sat down. soon stars started and they were really fucking good. good energy. fun. they had a keyboardist, a violinist, a bassist, a guitarist, a girl who sang and played guitar and the main singer who sometimes played trumpet. they rocked out. i liked closing my eyes a few times and just feeling the music....almost seeing it. i really liked the harmonies between the two singers. they were really dynamic.
so then their set was over and i went to get a shirt and hten we poked our heads into the main floor but then jake wa slike have you ever been to the top balcony and neither of us had so we checked it out and the seats were steeper so you could see even better thant he lower balcony. so we found a seat towards the left and waited for the show. and oh god i think it's the best show i've ever been to. like not my favorite band i've seen but their raw emotion was just incredible. the first song they played that i recognized was teh new year. it wasn't jsut teh songs i recognized that were good though, of course. there was one song that somehow just set my head floating. it was an odd feeling but it felt kinda heavy but floaty and was floating around on my neck. felt strange but good. all the lights were really good. there was this one song where they turned lights toward the ceiling and played them around and there was mist int he air and so all the colors were swirling in front of us and on teh ceiling and the chandelier it was so pretty.
soul meets body was so pretty. it was one of the songs that brought tears to my eyes with its beautiful emotion. god. oh and we looked liek giants was amazing. the beginning singing part was amazing and then they went into a really long jam. i dont have any idea how long it was but it was amazing and seemed to go on indefinitely. sooooo good. earlier in the song i'd noticed a few corner marks on the stage with orange tape, the same tape they used to tape down cords and indicate where certain things shoudl go so i windered what was supposed to be there. then partway through the jam some guys came otu and put a mat down with more marks and set up a bass drum, snare drum, and two cymbals in front of the big drumset and ben gibbard went over and started playing drums along with the drummer and it was sooo awesome. and hten by the end he switched back to guitar and they took the drums away. then after that they played the sound of settling and i never realized how short that song was or how much it rocks. they had so much energy poured into the song. that's the one song i ended up practically headbanging to. it made me dizzy and felt cool. then on the chorus which is even more energetic they had flashing blue lights up into the audience and that was jsut insane. so then the show was "over" i like how encores provide the opportunity for alternate endings of sorts.
so then after a while of clapping and stomping etc. ben gibbard came out with an acoustic guitar and played i will follow you into the dark which was incredibly beautiful with everyone in the audience downstairs singing along and singing well. then another song and then i'm not sure buti think that's when they played transatlanticism. it was really beautiful. i dont think i ever really listened to the lyrics before tonight so i'm including them at the end of this post. yeah so the concert was jsut soo good. i was like clutching my skirt onthe edge of my seat a lot of the time. didn't know how i was containing my ecstacy. so then sadly it was over and we waited in the long press of people trying to make it downstairs. then to the marta station where there were lots of noisy people from some other event. but they all left at five points and the train was practically empty till decatur where eliot met us.
drovve jake home and after a little of my gushign about the concert even though i could tell he was sad but didn't know why he told me that will had been pulled over drunk so we didnt know what woudl hapen to him. i tried to cheer eliot up. i didn't get too damp in my spirits because how could i, having come fromsuch an amazing concert? so after dropping jake off i told eliot about the concert while we listened to pink floyd and he slowly got a tad bit happier and then aorund midnight bobby called to say that will had gotten off fairly well so that cheered us both up big time and so it was ok to go home. HAPPY! yay for jake buying tickets and letting me come! awesomeness.
"Transatlanticism"
by Death Cab for Cutie
The atlantic was born today, and i'll tell you how...
The clouds above opened up and let it out.
I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole.
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
Making islands where no island should go.
Oh no.
Those people were overjoyed; they took to their boats.
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat.
The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flood lands to your door have been silenced forever more.
The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
It seems farther than ever before
Oh no.
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
[instrumental break]
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
So come on, come on
So come on, come on
So come on, come on
So come on, come on
