The rambling writer's inspirations...

Every writer's got one, just like an addiction to a caffeinated drink or a tendancy to delay everything. I don't know how much my love for other writers shines through in my own work but they're always in the back of my head convincing me to push ahead with whatever weird thing I'm scribbling down. Right now, on top of my screen-play I'm writing a short story about a girl who falls for a much older famous man and how the press reaction fucks her up. These are somne of my favourite writers, personal heroes and down right geniuses.

Chuck Palahniuk - He has that wonderful honour of being one of only 2 writers who has driven me close to vomiting with a piece of literature (Bret Easton Ellis is the other) But despite this little tidbit of info, he's probably my all time favourite writer. His nihilistic style has become infamous and he treads areas no other writer would dare to go. He inspired anarchy with Fight Club, now a cult hit. Everytime I read his work I think about how pushing the boundaries of taste can be considered art. I've never been tempted to write about carrot sex yet (see Haunted) but I do try to be braver with my ideas. (Favourite book - Lullaby)

J.K. Rowling - I am a self admitted Harry Potter fangirl. But Rowling has a deeper connection for me because if it wasn't for her I don't think I'd be writing today. I first read Harry Potter when I was 8 or 9 and I was immediately addicted. She has an imagination I could only dream of and the way she tied up everything in Deathly Hallows is amazing. I had some silly problems when I was a kid and the HP series got me through a lot. She encouraged me to open up my twisted imagination and let loose the madness. Without Rowling, there is no me. (Favourite book - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)

Jeffrey Eugenides - He's only written 2 books but they've afected me more than I could ever say. The Virgin Suicides showed me how to take on a difficult subject with a lot of heart and soul, and Middlesex, my favourite book of all time, is a piece of artwork. It's funny without being over-the-top, emotional without being sickly, artistic and poetic without being pretentious, fantastical and real, and has the best narrator in modern day fiction. Patience is the key with Eugenides - it took him 9 years to write Middlesex and not a day was wasted in my opinion. It's really a case of quality over quantity with him, a lesson well learned. (Favourite book - Middlesex)
