Because the Joker in the Dark Knight wasn't so much a character as he was a theme/function of the story. He propelled the story along and was the reason why everything happened, BUT the joker was not a 3D multi faceted character.

He was insane. He wanted to cause chaos. And that was it - He was no deeper then that. He was a function of the story to make everything else happen - to make the other characters have to make decisions and grow/change.

That said, I did think Ledger was excellent as the Joker, I just do not think the character itself is enough to win an Oscar. A nomination for supporting actor maybe.

Personally, I would have liked to see what Ledger would have done with Two face Harvey (who the film was really about) - much more interesting.
