Wendal called me a few hours ago to let me know that Artie Gilbert, one of the best actors and directors in the region, passed away this afternoon.
I'm still processing the emotions from this, and unfortuantely there are still productions of "A Few Good Men" left to perform, tonight included. Artie's artistic partner Ben is in tonight's show, as well as many other collegues of Artie's. I can only imagine what the green room looks like right now. However I think its appropriate that many of the people who loved Artie best are performing in a piece featuring the Marines, something that was very much a part of Artie's life.
I've done a few shows with Artie performing, but my best experience was when he directed me in my first professional production, "Picnic" by William Inge. His directing style was brisk to say the least, but he was hands down one of the best directors I"ve ever worked with. I was hoping to work with him again as he was slated for a recovery, but unfornately that will no longer happen.
Rest in Peace Artie, you will be greatly greatly missed.
