reviewing: Kamikaze Girls (adaptation)
Back in February, I decided to order the Kamikaze Girls bluray release. After many delays it arrived yesterday and I watched it promptly, eager to see how the novel's witty prose would be portrayed in the film.
From the beginning of the movie, I was impressed. The director knew how to change the pace of the book (always slower than that of a film adaptation) while making it amusing to watch, and maintaining many essential quotes from Takemoto, and keeping everyone in character: from their personalities to the physical aspect, even though the general aesthetic of the film aimed at a comical relief or parody sort of look.
The camera takes were amazing, as well as the photography. The soundtrack consists of quite a few catchy songs too.
The Bluray comes with a bonus disc with a few interesting features, yet my complaint is the lack of subtitles in the main disc: It is sad to see that there were no official spanish or french subtitles, since this was a european only release. I am sure many people didn't support the small company by purchasing it due to this. Instead, a company based in Spain: Cameo, was responsible for the spanish release. I enjoy english subtitles much more, but would have liked to watch it with my spanish speaking friends.
All in all, it was well worth the purchase, I am quite happy it wasn't as hyped as I expected it to be, it is a truly well made independent film and now I fully understand why it deserved all the praise.
