Depressing post

Yesterday I saw The Screams of Kitty Genovese, one of the entrants in the NYMF. It's a chamber opera about the case. Last night Michael asked me what I thought of it--as a piece of art, I thought it was quite good. Musically, it's excellent. It's also very well-directed and acted. My review of the show is up on BroadwayWorld.

In a way, I actually liked that the killer was given a voice-- it made the story that much more chilling. He seemed so sane and collected, not ranting and raving like Sweeney Todd or one of the Assassins. That creeped me out severely.

Ugh. What a sad story.

Yeah, that's why I said "Also, on a political (I guess?) tack"--at that point, I found it difficult to separate my feeling about it as a work of art vs. my feelings about it as a depiction of something that not only happened, but recently and whose reverberations are still being felt today. If it had been a straight work of fiction, hearing him sing wouldn't have bothered me so much, although I still feel he was romanticized too much.
