So let me start by directing you to
imashark's post on
her thoughts about Supernatual Season 7 because while this is me babbling ad nauseum my own opinions about the show, it's all basically a long ass reply to her post.
So.
I shipped Destiel from youtube videos before I even saw the show (because
imashark introduced me to their eye-fucking ways and I instantly approved and said "MORE!")and I actually started shipping them less as I went through the series. At first anyway.
I kind of view Dean and Castiel as polar opposites when it comes to awareness. I think that Dean had a physical attraction to Cas pretty early on (and for those that say Dean is straight I direct you to his fangirl obsession with Dr. Sexy. The man is bi and simply far more comfortable identifying as straight. Deal with it.) but being Dean, he of course ignores it.
Castiel, on the other hand, always seemed emotionally entangled with Dean. But he's not human and wasn't intended to have this type of emotion so I think for a long time Cas was kind of clueless to what exactly it was he was feeling.
Enter Season Six.
They were at odds almost the entire season from the get go. Cas was fairly hostile from his opening scenes and Dean was ungrateful and demanding. It was definitely different from Season 5. Call it thru shipper glasses all you want but I think Dean felt a bit abandoned by Cas (which Dean clearly has issues with feeling towards people he cares about), especially being right after Sam died. I think it's also during this time away that Cas became aware of how he felt. Because while a part of him just wanted Dean to be happy with Lisa, he acted all pissy and irritable whenever he was actually in Dean's presence.
Everything changed after 'My Heart Will Go On'. They still fought but it didn't have that tang of bittnerness and just outright anger they'd been doing the entire season.
Enter my theory.
Everything about the alternate timeline seemed just that little bit better, right? I think Cas used the opportunity of altering the timeline for the souls to correct some of his own mistakes. I also think he and Dean were bumping uglies in that timeline. And he let Dean remember it. I think that would really fuck with Dean's head but, being Dean, would refuse to talk about it.
The saddest part about when the truth about Cas working with Crowley starts to come out is how much Dean tried to defend him. As Cas said, every instinct was telling Dean that Bobby and Sam were right but he simply could not believe it. Not until it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. And even then, he tried over and over again to fix it before it was too late.
So yeah. 07.1 - Godstiel to me is a culmination of Castiel's feelings of betrayal in regards to God and Dean. I think he took the souls for pure reasons. He was terrified of what Raphael would do if he gained control of heaven (and I think terrified of what would happen to Dean). Once he became Godstiel, I think the souls fed off his anger and abandonment at God and his hurt and betrayal with Dean.
It's childish, but like
imashark (and Dean) have said, Cas is kind of a child when it comes to emotions. All the angels act that way to a certain degree.
And can I just add that the interaction between Death and Godstiel was AWESOME. And oddly kind of turned me on. It was the meeting of the BAMFs. Although the look on Castiel's face when Dean ordered Death to kill him was all Smitey McSmiterson times gazillion. I was all 'ohhhhhhhh'-ing at the screen.
Anyway.
Dean - Dean gets to a certain point when he just shuts down emotionally. If you really look at how he acted with the whole Godstiel thing, he goes through all five stages of grief over Cas. He finally comes to the conclusion that there's no other solution than to kill him so he accepts it, hardens himself to it, and sets out to do it.
As soon as Cas showed he wanted help, Dean was there. And, while it took several times, when Dean really believed Cas was sorry and would do his best to make up for it, Dean said okay. And yeah, when he thought Cas died ...leave it to Dean to pack so much emotion into one little word.
Also, I have to agree that Sam was spectacular and showed once and for all he is a truly remarkable person. Cas broke The Great Wall of Sam and even said Sam should be thankful Cas wasn't sending him back to Hell and yet it was still Sam who tried to reach out. I think Sam understood exactly what Cas was going through because Castiel's intentions had been pure. So had Sam's with the demon blood. They both royally fucked up and underestimated what they were dealing with but Sam was forgiven and he believed that Cas should be given the same chance. I have so much love for that moose.
And finally, Levia!Cas is so fucking awesome. Not that I wouldn't be completely overjoyed for little nerdy angel Cas to be back in the saddle, but seriously this Leviathan character HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL. And after following in Sam's great nerdy footsteps and doing research, literally nothing the boys use as of now can kill this thing. Seeing as how I think it was the leviathan and not God that resurrected Cas this time around, it's got some scary mofo powers, too. My personal hope is that Levia!Cas is the big bad of this season and maybe possibly royally fucks with Dean's emotions in the process but that our Cas is ultimately saved.
And then Dean and Cas fuck like bunnies.
IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK?!?!
