MCC Plan Goes To Voters
TRI-STATE - Governing Board members have approved an ambitious master plan and scheduled a November, 2008 bond election to upgrade Mohave Community College facilities. They’ll be seeking voter approval for $111.5-million in funding to improve each of the campuses with renovations, additions and new construction.
College executives were preparing early this year to ask the Governing Board to set the election this November, but scuttled that plan. Member Lynda French, during the Board’s May 8 meeting, said passage of an $80-million bond issue in the Kingman Unified School District provides positive energy and momentum and wondered why administrators were suggesting a late 2008 election.
``When you look at 18 months, we could have two babies in that time,” French quipped. ``A lot can happen in 18 months. We’ve got this wonderful plan, so what says we don’t go now and then again next year if it fails?”
Chancellor Tom Henry explained many factors favor an election in late 2008. He noted the City of Kingman will likely place a $41-million bond issue before voters this November and he said experts advise against having major money proposals competing against each other on the same ballot.
President Olivia McCormick said the College Foundation looks forward to spearheading the information and awareness campaign in support of the bond election.
