Last night I was sitting at the local independence fireworks display with some friends thinking the same thoughts I always think while witnessing the nationalistic vitriol that is the 4th: Aren't these fireworks intended to represent a revolution? I always felt that the fireworks were a blatant reference to exploding ordinance used in a fight to cast off the shackles of oppression. The whole thing should be a relatively quiet thoughtful affair in which we remember that at any point, should such a point arise, we could do it again. Then my thoughts turn to the people surrounding me. My god the people surrounding me. "Yes little Timmy, this is the greatest god given country in the entire world. Only unpatriotic assholes could possibly see a problem in our great country that wasn't started by those damn bleeding hearts." During this entire display I feel like the only person who is really considering the whole situation. George Orwell stories spiral around in my head. "Some animals are born more free than others." In this case the top 10%(wealth wise) of the white christian Americans are born more free than the rest of us. The bottom 90% get sent off to die in wars we don't believe in, we have to constantly fight for the right to do whatever we want with our bodies, we have to fight to keep food in our children's mouths, and we have to fight against the top 10% shoving their religion down our throats. From now on I'm going to celebrate Independence Day quietly at home, imagining the joy of freedom.
