It's now 7:45 a.m. I've been awake for about an hour now, that's pretty impressive for me. I set my alarm for 7:00 this morning, as I'm to be helping Dan move in a little later. But Ari called me this morning on her way to school, so we talked for about a half hour or so. Hence the extra 15 minutes. I spent a fair amount of last night organizing my new room, I'm rather pleased with the way it's turned out. I went from 115 sq ft down to 105 sq ft in June... and now I'm down to 95. But somehow I feel like I have more now than I ever did before. Must be the lofted bed, that reclaims a fair portion of the 20 sq ft that I lost.... Ian comes in tomorrow. I'll be ecstatic to see him again, but I'm not looking forward to returning his electronics. His speakers are quite nice, I don't know what I'll do until I receive my own. I've also been very spoiled by the 5 disc changer. Going back to a single cd at a time is no good.... especially since I can't find the power cable for my player. May have to go down to Radio Shack and buy one. I was there looking for extension cords last night, they totally did not have what I was looking for. Why does no one sell grounded extension cords??? Is that really so hard!? I saw 2 prong to 3 prong converters at the CU bookstore today, but that sorta defeats the purpose of having a ground wire. Not that it's really needed, I guess. In fact, it's not at all. The only grounded plug I have is my power strip, which doesn't even matter since everything that plugs into it is ungrounded. Hm.... maybe those are a better solution than I thought. The real problem is this, though: I want one of those cords that when you plug it into the wall it doesn't stick out very far, the plug is flat and the cord comes out from the side. It's much better that way, gives me more room to open my closet door. Hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for soon. I have to stop by Columbia Hardware this afternoon anyway.... maybe they'll have it.
Ooh, I almost forgot! How could I forget?!? For the portion of my readership that doesn't go to Columbia, you may have been unaware that "Princeton Sucks." It's a common theme up here, but apparently much of the rest of the country is immune to this simple fact. In general, the slogan references the University specifically, but I propose extending it to any entity which associates itself with the name 'Princeton'. This kills several birds with one stone: Princeton University; Princeton, NJ; the whole state of New Jersey, for that matter; CollegeBoard, based in Princeton, NJ; ETS, the most evil and scandalous division of CollegeBoard; and the primary subject of this rant, the Princeton Review. Monique referenced PR's newly posted college ratings in her LJ, so I decided it might be interesting to check it out. I won't comment on Columbia's placement in many of the rankings, other than that I feel we're not given full credit there. However, it is a subjective system, so they're entitled to put us wherever they like. What really bothers me is the
Demographics section of the rankings. Anyone see anything wrong there? Or at least anything a little bit biased? I do, I do! Religion certainly has its place in a diverse student body. A huge part of college is interacting with people who see the world differently than you do. People's perceptions of the world are based on the belief and value systems in which they're raised, and so maintaining a representation of a variety of these systems is extremely beneficial to the environment of a community. This is in no way an anti-religion rant. I'm just infuriated by the way that PR tries to measure this effect. Or I don't even know if they're trying. "Students pray on a regular basis?" Give me a break! That's a ridiculous categorization, which should be readily apparent when Brigham Young appears at the top of a list claiming to represent diversity! 86% of students there are white, and I believe that just about all of them are Mormon. How is that diversity? In fact, it's just the opposite. Everyone there believes the same thing as everyone else, it's not a really intellectually stimulating environment to be in. As with all other categories, PR rates the best and worst schools. Their title for the least religiously diverse schools, "students ignore God on a regular basis," is even more maddening! Choosing not to believe is not ignorance any more than choosing to believe is. The very attitude that PR displays towards relgion is itself intolerant and against the spirit of diversity. On this second list are Reed and Vassar, often considered among the top regional liberal arts colleges. And for the Floridians, there is New College. Yes, New College. Listed as "monochromatic." What a joke.
So, Princeton sucks. Q.E.D.
Now my cd has changed. On to Our Lady Peace. I once again reference Ian's wonderful cd changer. But it's 20 after 8. Dan should be calling me soon to let me know when he gets here, so I believe I'll conclude this post and go get ready.

Or not. I just posted this entry and realized that the link was in an illegible red. The color scheme of the journal in general needs some work, but for now I'm just gonna tweek that one link.
