It's been a while since I updated with anything "real" and there are peoples here who still pay attention to my life in some capacity, so I shall take this moment to update briefly.
I spent an exciting weekend being on trains which were delayed or avoiding those which were cancelled. I was supposed to visit someone in Northallerton, then day trip to York with a view to also visiting Durham, time depending. Instead, despite arriving in Newcastle in plenty of time, heading south was a whole new kettle of fish as I was caught amid power failures, icy tracks and general chaos as a journey billed to take no more than twenty minutes took a good hour. I actually stopped no more than fifty feet from Northallerton station at one point. I had half a mind to leap out of the window and walk to the platform. However, I'd probably have just been arrested, delaying my arrival further.
Furthermore, it turned out that my train was actually the last train heading to York that day, meaning that, instead of the predicted romping round the streets of old Jorvik, I got to experience the civic delights of the other jewel of North Yorkshire, Northallerton town. It so happens that I like pubs, so it worked out! Thankfully, the roads had cleared by Sunday, so we pootled over to Middlesbrough to catch a movie, Avatar 3D. It's not bad, but it does go on too long and the story is clichéd, which means that I found myself clock-watching after an hour. So, it was worth it for the novelty value, but I'm going to reserve judgement on it for the time being. When it comes out on DVD, I might have another watch, to see how it looks after another viewing, when the hype has died down.
Anyway, I didn't get enough sleep and my weekend plans were largely scuppered, but it was fun and the snow started to melt, which improved my mood somewhat, even though the ice remained, disrupting transport and services out of Northallerton, getting me home a good hour behind schedule. Such are the delights of visitation!
Good times.
