Making things - May - Carcassonne mini-quilt

Jun 18, 2016 22:04

(April is still pending because the photos are slightly more complex.)

The start of May was Sebi and Carrie's wedding, and the theme was board games. I decided to go as a Carcassonne tile, and I made a quilted tile which doubled as a wedding present. (The wedding was on 1st May but I was still finishing this on the day so it totally counts as May.) The quilting was mostly an excuse to practice free-hand machine embroidery because it is the most fun ever.

I started by picking a Carcassonne tile (from the river expansion and scaling it up by copying out a grid at a larger scale.

I decided to try appliqué for the tile construction (mostly because curved piecing is currently beyond me). The top of the quilt has the pieces glued on with fusible web then appliquéed with a loose zig-zag. The back has the Carcassonne C attached in the same way but then gone over again with a much tighter zig-zag. I failed to use a stabilser (this is the first time I've tried this) and so the fabric puckered a bit but it's not that noticeable.

You will notice that the quilted-but-not-neatened-up images have a lot of trailing threads. I thought it would be easier to do these all in one go at the end, but actually some of them got caught up in later sewing and were a major pain to tidy up. So next time I will be good and tidy them as I go along...

This as the first thing I've tried to bind and it's not very neat! Not helped by using the blue-grey fabric to match the C, which is lovely and glossy but also slippery and hard to bind with. Next time, cotton. (Quilters make their own bias binding because apparently they have nothing better to do, WTF?) I bought a craftsy course for binding advice and it was very helpful, but the suggested method for finishing off neatly turned out to be hard to do on such a small quilt.

Ben points out that you couldn't use it for a game because the quilting means you can tell from the back which tile it is. (But it's a river tile so this is less important :-P)
