1) First, you need to be a member of this year's worldcon, Sasquan. Supporting membership is sufficient. If you aren't a member, join here:
https://sasquan.swoc.us/sasquan/reg.php 2) Pay for a voting token:
https://sasquan.swoc.us/sasquan/sitevote-pay.phpUse the 'Member ID Lookup' to find yourself on the Sasquan membership list. Make a note of your Sasquan membership number for later, then click 'Submit information'. Put in billing details; I put 'UK' for both the 'state/province' and 'country' fields. Also I copied my billing address to the shipping fields. When the payment's gone through (this was fast for me) you'll be given a voting token number (it's also sent by email, so you can carry on to step 3 later if you like).
[ 2a) Ian got a disturbing 'duplicate entry for key primary' error message - sounds like a database error to me, so if this happens to you then email them at token2017@sasquan.org, info@sasquan.org . They said it was fine, not to worry about it, but I'd still email them if it happens to you.]
3) Download the voting form:
http://sasquan.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Site-Selection-Ballot-A41.pdf , and print it out.
4) Fill in the form, the important bits are:
a) name and address
b) signature
c) advance membership (voting) fee - tick 'I have paid on the Sasquan website' and write in your voting token number from step 2
d) Sasquan membership number - from step 2
e) your choice of site - either a single cross for one site if you have no other preference, or 1 for your favourite, 2 for second favourite, etc.
All bids have filed paperwork which you can read at
http://sasquan.org/site-selection/ if you'd like more information with which to make your choice. (NB none of the bids will include guests of honour; we're choosing on the merits of (a) location and (b) capability of the bid committee, without being swayed by big names.)
5) Don't fold the form as it repeatedly instructs you to; instead, scan it to PDF, and email it to ballot2017siteselection@sasquan.org before 24:00 PDT on Monday 10th August 2015.
6) Finished! When the winning bid is announced (at Sasquan in August), the money you paid in step 2 will automatically turn into a membership of the winning convention.
Yes, you're right, this is a massive faff...
