London and upwards
On Friday I had a meeting at Churchill, and it was a nice sunny morning, so I took my camera along. Sadly it got greyer as the day went on, but we had the exciting Moller Centre tower to play in, and my camera is good at skies, so I got some nice photos anyway. On the way back I popped in to say hello to Cockroft and Eddington. In the evening, angoel and missycarrie visited for playtesting. The beetle game has had an overhaul and is now really quite good, and we played an interesting game of sun-mechanic but discovered it was too slow to play with 5. angoel brought me some old actuarial tables which I shall have to think of an arty purpose for.
Yesterday we got up early and went to Harlow to climb up things. A shorter session than usual, but I am in the pleasing bit of learning where every time I can do something new. Zoomed up three 3s with little problem, came off another, and got half-way up a 3+ having beaten a tricky bit. Lots of movements now feel much more natural, and I don't have to keep stopping because my arms ache. Also lots of belay practice.
Then we went to the Wellcome Collection to see their Death exhibition, which is probably best summarised as 'death in popular culture'. As always for Wellcome exhibitions, it was full of interesting stuff, well organised and making some interesting points. Lots and lots of memento mori (including a collection of metamorphic postcards), some beautiful medical and anatomical illustrations, and many artworks. Highlights for me were several Dürer illustrations including the Four Riders of the Apocalypse, and a medical textbook illustration of the major muscle groups with a surprise rhinoceros in the background. Thanks to the kindness of I. and D., I left with a lovely book of lists by Umberto Eco, and a cuddly neuron.
Finally to the murder mystery exhibition at the British Library, which it turns out is quite small so I'm glad I didn't make a special trip. However, lots of interesting bits and pieces, and definitely worth dropping in on if you're passing.
