(un)necessary tidbits

With half an hour of work left and no tasks on the board for me at the moment, I decided that given my reticence this summer to post on my activities, perhaps an update is in order.  So here it is, my latest Japan adventure (as that is what took up my mid-July to early September):

[ooh! site note: I just got a MASSIVE zucchini. For free!  Well, I suppose I paid for it with a slight loss of dignity as I ran out of the office softly squealing and flapping my hands with excitement over Jon's announcement of free zucchini in the 4th floor lounge.  Oh, well, sacrifices must be made.  I've got zucchini!  Hot dog!]

Japan, in a nutshell:
* I shook hands with the princess of Japan.  To add icing to that bit of cake I said, in Japanese and using keigo, "Thank you very much for coming to speak to us today."  She smiled, oh, that Julie Andrews of Japan smiled.
* I played Capture the Flag with 71 other Japanese and American delegates in a Tokyo park.
* I nearly cried in nervous laughter/fear at dancing devils at our reception in Akita.
* I ate roughly a year's worth of green tea Coolish (drinkable ice cream but not at all like a milk shake)
* had a lovely evening with a friend from study abroad
* was the go-between for a friend from undergrad as he sought a little mountain villa.  Outcome: success.
* in the process of the above wooed two elderly ladies
* keeping with the theme of old Japanese people like me, I was told that "despite being big, you're very cute in your own way."  I love grandmas from Akita, especially when they follow that up with, "Bethany, you should marry _________, become Japanese, and come here for your honeymoon.  I'll take care of you."
* did not get sick as delegate after delegate fell around me.  Did, however, get sick after staying out until after 4am at a bar with Jack.  Karaoke is addictive and those boys have now made more friends in Kagoya.
* learned a bit of Quebec-ian slang, my favorite of which being "TAHbachtNACHT."  William was a funny kid with that "tall, dark, and handsome" vibe going on.
* spent roughly 12 hours on a bullet train in the space of oh, roughly 72.  But I can now say from personal examination that Japan - or at least the area from Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima-Fukuoka-Kagoshima and back - is pretty.  Same goes for Akita.
* got hooked on kiritampo nabe.  If anyone has the recipe for this, please send.

So that was my trip in a nutshell.  There was, obviously, a lot more, but I think that'll stay with me.

Ooh, it's almost time to go home.
Adios, kids.
