My sister Rebecca's youngest child died. We buried her Sunday in the cemetery next to my biological grandmother.  At this point it looks like SIDs, but they haven't given the family an actual cause of death yet.

The day it happened we were told it could take up to 3 months to get a cause from the medical examiner.

There is a police investigation, so I think we may get an actual cause of death from them eventually.

The thing that really got to me though, was during this whole time, when talking to my grandfather, he was almost rabid about the idea of Obama winning the presidency. I love my grandfather, but I have lost almost all my respect for his opinion on anything not related to animal husbandry or farm equipment. You'd think a man with 3 great grandchildren who are not white, would finally let his bitter hatred of the brown skinned man go. But no, he can't.

And the comment that just made me feel great from him? (the family was having lunch together before the funeral.) "I hope you like that (the gumbo) We don't have any tortillas." He was trying to be funny, but it was such a bigoted remark that I don't think anyone did. It's the first time in my life I ever wanted to tell him to fuck off. The real irony? He more than dark enough to pass for Hispanic himself.
