6:30A

The digital display flashed red in the darkness. Deaq rolled over and pulled Van into his arms, snuggling comfortably. It was Sunday, it was New Year's day and they had absolutely no reason to get up for hours. Not until-Shit! His eyes popped open. Brunch with his parents. What on earth had he been thinking of, to agree? Somehow in the week since kissing Van under the mistletoe in front of his family, he'd lulled himself into forgetting exactly what that mean. Being 'out' with Van was one thing. Discussing his love life over mimosas with his parents, was something else entirely.

He looked down at Van who had tucked his head into Deaq's chest. His mouth was open and he was drooling slightly. A part of him- the part that had fled across the country to escape his family, just wanted to blow the whole thing off, but he knew it mattered to Van more that to him, and he was beginning to think maybe nothing mattered more to him than Van.

11:30A

Deaq's mother slid the full plate over to Van, and he dug in eagerly.
"Everything is great, Mrs. Hayes."

"Thank you Van, and I think you should probably call me Izzie-at least until you feel comfortable with Mom."

Van dropped his fork, looking at Deaq helplessly.

Deaq glared at his mother. "What exactly is going on here?"

She smiled sweetly, which always meant trouble. "You mean other than the fact that you and Van are living together and you haven't bothered to mention it to us?"

He and Van looked at each other again. "Look, we aren't..." He started to say they weren't 'living' together, living together, when he realized they actually were. He thought about the way he'd felt that morning when he woke up. Secure, settled, happy-committed. It hadn't started out that way, but somewhere along the line, they'd started doing more than just sharing a house and a bed.

He saw the same sort of surprise cross Van's face, and they grinned sheepishly at one another. "We weren't sure if..."

"Yeah, well..."

They both trailed off, and Deaq's father took pity on them. "Well, everybody knows everything now, so finish your meal."

They chatted about how the business was going, and his parents upcoming vacation before Deaq let curiosity get the best of him. "How did you know anyway?"

His father frowned across the table. "Deaqon Levelle Hayes-I was a detective for nearly thirty years."

His mother did one better, reaching over and pinching his arm hard enough to make him wince. Van snickered, covering it with a cough when Deaq glared at him. "And I'm your mother. We knew when you had a crush on Yolanda Garrett, and we knew when you had a crush on Stefan Hilton."

"You never said anything."

"Dre used to try and cover for you. You children forget we grew up in the sixties-in California. You may think we're naive old fogies, but I could tell you some stuff that would curl your hair." She laughed, and exchanged a knowing look with her husband. "We were hoping that you'd bring it up eventually. We never had that chance though."

The pain was still apparent in his mother's eyes, and Deaq looked away guiltily. Van reached over and laid a hand on his thigh under the table, squeezing lightly. His smile promised that everything was going to be okay, just like it always did. Deaq gave him a quick grin in return. His boy was crazy optimistic, but he was usually right.

Van lifted his glass. "Here's to second chances."

Mrs Hayes nodded, lifted her own glass and smiled at them both. "Amen to that."
