Prompt 064/Summer
Tested.
When Billie got in that morning, Van was sitting on the floor in front of the artwork they'd confiscated from Sophia.
“Did you get any sleep at all?”
He shrugged, never taking his eyes off the painting in front of him.
“Van-it’s not your fault.” She paused at the look he gave her. “Well, okay-it’s not completely your fault. You did what you had to do, and nobody blames you.”
“That’s bull Billie and you know it. Cassidy blames me. Sophia, in whatever hell she went to, blames me, and Deaq sure as hell blames me.”
“He didn’t say that.”
“He doesn’t have to. He gestured to the painting he was staring at. Do you know what sun flowers mean?”
“No, why am I not surprised you do?” That he ignored the crack told her just how upset he was.
“They mean loyalty. That’s all Deaq asked Billie, and I need to be able to give that to him completely-otherwise, I don’t need to be his partner.
A few weeks later, Van was in the hospital with a minor concussion and a few bruises and contusions. He was getting dressed when she noticed the tattoo-a small, detailed sunflower at the indention of hip and thigh.
She’d planned on mentioning it at some point, but shit happened and happened and happened.
It was months later, deep into the summer before she thought about it again. She’d let Van and Deaq talk her into going to the beach with them.
They still treated her like she was breakable, even thought it had been months since they had gotten her back from Gabrielle. She knew the demand that she come along to keep Deaq from being bored to death while Van surfed, was actually a concentrated effort to get her out of the apartment.
With the future of the Candy Store in limbo, so were they. She wondered if Deaq would go back to New York; if Van would drift away on the wind without the anchor his partner provided. She wondered what she would do without the closest thing to a family she’d had in years.
For now though, the sun was warm, and Deaq was beside her, making her laugh with cracks about Van.
Van splashed them both with water as he flopped down on the towel.
“Damn it Van!”
“Come on-the two of you could at least get a little wet.”
Things quickly dissolved into a wrestling match between the two of them, and Billie snatched up her drink in an effort to keep it sand free. She was about to intervene, when Van grabbed Deaq's trunks, using the momentum to flip him over. Material pulled away from flesh briefly and she saw a tiny detailed sunflower.
Her surprise was not in the fact of it, but that she hadn’t realized it before. Granted she’d been a little busy kicking a heroin addiction, but still, she had an eye for her boys, and yet somehow she’d missed the point when they went from being partners to partners.
Watching them tumble together like puppies under the piercing blue sky, she felt the invisible thread that bound the three of them. It was then that she understood that they had passed the test. Aced it in fact. Despite McKussick and Hill and everything else the world threw at them, they were here-together. She took a deep breath and she could feel the tightness in her loosen with her exhale. They were going to be fine.
