I really love the concept of this show, but even more, I love the fact that because of the way they film, the actors are having something of a similar experience as the characters.
Watch this if you're not. Watch if you like action, comedy, and drama all balanced in one show. Watch if you like multiculturalism, watch if you like LGBTQ characters, POC and women all featured in stories that embrace their life and culture rather than just supporting the main(usually white, male)characters story, watch if you like terrific ensembles, watch if you like smart, savvy, survivors, watch if you like the idea of interconnection, watch if you like pretty explicit sex that manages to be a beautiful example of that interconnection., watch if you like clever story telling. Hell watch if you like Naveen Andrews(what? people have watched things for worse reasons)
more thoughts but some minor spoilers if you haven't watched the show at all. nothing specific to the Xmas special
finally got to see the Xmas special. Still ambivalent about the new Capheus. So the deal is, even though no one has been specific, watching the Xmas special I can take a guess as to why they switched actors. I just really liked Aml Ameen as Capheus. Hopefully I will warm up to Toby Onwumere because in general, I'm still in awe how they manage to make me care about not just the 8 main characters but the supporting characters too.
I love Felix and Dani and Hernando and Rajan and Aminta and Jela as much as I do the 8 and even the characters with less screen time feel real and connected to the characters. The women from Sun's cell, Capheus' mother, Silas etc...and OMG do I want Whispers to die in a fire, screaming. I want them to pull his house down around his ears and for him to not be able to do a thing about it and I want the last image he has to be Angelica fucking laughing because she won. (so in other words, he's a brilliant villain is what I'm saying.)
This is just some excellent fucking casting and a willingness to let other characters have their moment. These characters don't feel like they exist merely to dot the is and cross the tees on the main characters stories, even though obviously they do. I don't know when I've seen genuine ensemble work done this well. Most shows, even shows I have loved, don't manage this.
