So my new friend, Kelly told me about this awesome website -- marinetraffic.com. It shows all the ships that are broadcasting AIS all over the world. On Friday for awhile I was able to track the Whitehorse and Edmonton (but the Brandon had their AIS turned off, which really makes sense, considering they are military ships anyway).
And now I'm just nerdy that I've dialed up to the internets on my computer while I'm on the Victoria Clipper on the way to Seattle and I'm tracking our route on it. It shows all kinds of interesting information, like ship information and how fast we're going and ETA and whatnot. Pretty cool. Here's the
Clipper VI's page on the website.
Pretty neat. If I recall correctly, all ships over over a certain size are required to broadcast AIS (except, obviously, military) and all passenger ships are required to regardless of size.
Coolest website ever. I'm such a nerd.
