Why Kim & Thurston....wwhhhhyyy?!

It's hard to tell who's selling out more; funny how writer suggests its Starbucks, because they're no longer allowing us to feel like we're in a completely convetional boring place, every time we step foot into their trenches ... Instead those trenches will be playing some of our most coveted tunes.

oh man oh man.

i really don't know how i feel about this. (though i did take the liberty of re-posting).

i used to feel so betrayed when a band i liked did anything corporate related. i was the first to jump on the "sellout" wagon. i really don't want to hear sonic youth when i walk into starbucks and i definitely agree with the author that my coolness feels validated when i walk in and hear norah jones.

but i also need to remember that sonic youth, or any indie band for that matter, isn't my little secret. and what good would music be if it didn't get shared?

i just wish it could've happened in a different way. with a different company.

word. i'm not down with hovering over music & convincing myself i'm the only deserving person of a good listen... but like the last line you just said, a different company, in a different way. It's more so just intersting to see how commodified the concept of "indie" continues to become; a total subversion of it's goal of remaining, well ... independent, and not market-oriented.
