First of all, I'd like to apologize for the comments you reference. It's certainly not your job to keep the band ruly, it's ours. It's part of our job description. The drum majors run practices, and that certainly falls under our juristiction, so to speak.
However, I think that a loud "hey band" from any member will quiet the band down, and that was basically the thrust of my meaning. Should it be your job though? No, and for that I apologize.
Another issue is, should we have to yell at all? Maybe I'm being naïve (I took time to find that diaresis, darnit), but I think all we should have to do is raise our hands or somesuch to indicate we intend to move on. If we have to yell everytime to get control of the band, it slows down practice, and sure enough, people will complain about that, too.
I don't want to have to yell for other reasons too.. One of the comments about potential new leadership during DM elections was whether we might be too strict about things. There needs to be a balance. Sure, the band could still be strong with some people leaving, but I don't want to drive those people out. If we become more popular (dare I dream?) there will be people who quit because we're too strict or to lenient, it's an inevitability, but I don't want people to quit specifically because I made the band not fun. Selfish? Probably. I suppose I could just let Sam do the yelling, and use my tried-and-true excuse of not being the one in charge. :p (Everyone! I claim the Nuremburg defense!)
Seriously though, I suppose the difficulty comes from my wanting the best of both worlds. I want a band that is focused and paying attention to what we do, but I also don't want to have to exert the kind of strictness necessary to push the band towards that state.
I'm sure there's more to say here, like an actual conclusion, but it's 3:30am, and I'm not thinking as clearly as usual.
