NBC sucks in the worst possible way.
Next week is UpFront week, where all the networks announce the final decisions for the fall line-ups, including cancellations, renewals, and brand spankin' new shows. A lot of the cancellations are being released early, though.
Including the [expected but dreaded] cancellation of Trauma. Dicks. That show made my week, and considering how much TV I watch on a weekly basis, that's saying something.
Even less expected was the announcement that Law & Order is ending. This show is as old as I am, and I grew up watching reruns. Maybe I don't watch it faithfully, but I know this show so well, I can watch the teaser and tell you the plot because I've already seen it three times.
All that NBC's got left for me is Chuck, and I wouldn't be surprised if they screw that up over the next season, too.
Looking at the new shows that NBC's picking up to fill in all it's gaps, I want to gag. All I see are copycats and poor storytelling. There's only one thing I might be interested in seeing: Chase, a Bruckheimer drama about U.S. Marshalls hunting down fugitives. Sounds exciting. Let's see how NBC screws it up.
The cancellation graveyard is going to be rife with good television until the industry changes its business model to incorporate viewers who use DVR and sites like Hulu and YouTube to watch their shows. Personally, I'm more than okay with sitting through a few commercials if it means my favorite shows and their networks are supported. I'm even okay with paying for a subscription (at a reasonable price, which $3+ per episode isn't, and a reasonable system, which paying for channels I have no interest in watching isn't).
What I'm not okay with is watching shows that appeal to the wired generation (the one that might not be able to sit down at the same time every week for a show but will stay up until the wee hours to catch up) being run into the ground by something like old-school Nielsen ratings. But this curmudgeonly beast of an industry is dragging its heels, and we're the ones who suffer for it. So break out the boots, folks, and let's give them a kick in the pants!
...okay. That's my two cents. Thoughts?
