I survived the 48 hour CA trip! It was an adventure to say the least. I saw two childhood friends, played some
Super Rub a Dub, got a haircut, set up for the wedding, attended the wedding and ran (well, walked/ran) 5k at the gym. Not to mention all the wonderful food I ate (like
these yummy fish tacos and some of
this tasty cake.)
And, per long airplan trips, I read a bunch. Here's the list:
Pay the Piper by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple (fun fairytale retelling)
Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez (interesting non-fiction, though I got a bit bored near the end)
H.I.V.E.: Higher Institute of Villainous Education by Michael Walden (yay! loved this one and I can't wait for the sequel)
Kung Fu Princess: Daughter of Light by Pamela Walker (quick girl power book)
My favorite reads were, by far, the first three volumes of
Emma by Kaoru Mori. They're manga set in Victorian England; an upstairs-downstairs story of a young, intelligent maid and an aristocrat who falls for her. Though it sounds like your typical doomed romance, there's a lot more going on in the story including a forward-thinking former governess, elephants in the courtyard and a woman who has dubbed herself Mrs. Trollop (!). My friend, R, loaned the series to me and I've sped through each volume. Actually, I have number 4 at home and I'm kicking myself that I forgot to bring it with me today.
Speaking of R, she and our other friend, B, just started a really cool blog. It's called
L.O.N.T.E.D (Learn One New Thing Every Day). If you get a moment, check it out!
