How is homosexuality generally treated in Japan? In general they seem rather private about sex (to the point of repression, which always seems to manifest in weird ways), and I'd have thought that for the most part they'd just ignore it. Or is it treated as a violation of their vaunted conformity?

(Sorry, I can only talk in stereotypes; I've never been.)

Anyway, it's a complex issue over here. I'm a gay American who's been here for over ten years, much of that time with my Japanese boyfriend. I don't go out on The Scene a lot, but here's what I've been able to piece together:

First of all, there are no religious prohibitions against being gay here, and you have NO idea how much easier that makes everything. Of all the challenges that gay people face in Japan, there is no one trying to "fix" them, or outlaw them or actively deny them civil rights. Very few people here, as far as I've been able to see, hate gay people ( ... )
