Kayaking

Yesterday I joined an outing sponsored by "Friends of Eastern Neck" and Washington College - sunset kayaking. Just paddling around the wildlife refuge, nothing too adventurous. About 25 random people. A few from the spring shore cleanup in early May. Winter didn't join me so I tried getting to know some of the other folks. This was only my second time in a kayak. The first time was on my Ha Long Bay tour in Vietnam. This time was longer and a bit more demanding. I was paddling against the tide at one point. In fact my hands have blisters and my wrists are sore. But overall I really enjoyed it. Maybe I should take it up as a hobby. Apparently as a spouse of a Washington College employee I can borrow their kayaks for free anytime. But not in a group, that turned out to not work well for me. I like to go slow and drift along. My favorite moment was seeing a blue heron fly across the water. Last night I was struggling to keep up with the group, and then I thought, how ridiculous, I'm not in a hurry to get somewhere! I came back to the wharf a little early but anyway I needed to get home and get a good night's rest for my first official day on the new job.
