Getting through the week

Where did the time go? I wanted to write about seeing the fabulous Carrie Fisher (i.e. Princess Leia) on Saturday in her one-woman show Wishful Drinking. But I figured if I wrote about it on the weekend, not so many people would see it. Then I got busy and couldn't find the time.

Let me just say that I highly recommend the show. Most of the show she spent poking at herself, especially her Star Wars persona. But she also did not shy away from talking about her alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder. She had many funny stories about her Hollywood eccentric parents (Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher) and somewhat bittersweet memories of her marriage to Paul Simon. She had excellent comedic timing and I was never bored. The visuals on the screen behind her also helped make it interesting. And the Lincoln Theater was an intimate setting. The show is in town until September 28.

Switching gears, yesterday was quite the gamut of events. Winter and I went to a friend's father's funeral in Clarksville. Owing to the fact that he's a big strong guy, he got conscripted for pallbearer duties (he doesn't mind at all). I didn't know the man but I knew of his daughter's love and devotion to him despite his struggle with mental illness. I was extremely sad when I first heard the news; I suppose some of my emotions might be caught up in thinking about my own father and how hard it will be to deal with his demise someday.

In the evening the DC ACM hosted a lecture about electronic voting. The guest speaker was a professor from Towson University. He had prepared a lot of powerpoint slides but then got sidetracked when the audience kept raising questions and debating. He had to skip a lot of his presentation unfortunately because we ran out of time. Managed to get a small group to Kinkead's afterwards though the staff was a bit annoyed that we came in about twenty minutes before closing time.

This morning Winter and I head off to GWU for the first day of the first class of the DC ACM Professional Development Seminar. We've got 15 students enrolled. Nowhere near capacity though we ended up in a smaller computer lab anyhow. And because our costs are minimal, we will make about $5,000 profit SURPLUS from the classes if you include the intermediate course being held Sept. 26-27.
