so today i ran my first race ever, it was a 5k at warner park out by the airport. the entire women's cross country team was running the race, along with members of the marquette women's cc team and the uwp men's cc team. needless to say, that becomes only slightly intimidating. when the race started i went out amazingly too fast, adrenaline kind of took over i guess... well i ran the first mile in 6:20, which included running straight up a sledding hill that was probably 50-60 feet long. that pretty much killed me, and to top things off, my shoe came untied about 3/4 of a mile into the race. (thank god they were using chip timing, that pretty much kept my shoe relatively tight for the rest of the race) too prove that i went out entirely too fast, i got passed by countless people (including most of the cc team) for the first 2.5 miles of the race. though i did make it up and passed 4 people at the end during my kick. overall it was a great experience, it gives me even more motivation to train everyday. i want to be able to beat the cc team (even though it may only be the women's team). i'll just chalk the relatively poor performance up to inexperience. maybe if i get some spikes if i run a cross-country race again i'll do better, definitely a different feeling running on grass than on a track/road/sidewalk like i'm use too.
