Got the grant money!!  *do do dooo!*  They are in the mail!  *do do dooo!* They should be here soon! *do do doooo!* Get to play with them for the next two years.

I am totally biology nerding out about the ordering of my new babies (they are actually babies, not me getting emotionally invested in them!). I've spent this evening fleshing out exactly ( Read more... )

OMG!! Scorpians and Spiders?! *envy!!* I didn't know what you studied and expected some sort of thorough data-like speech here, not super cool photos!! WOW!! I've often thought of owning such things...not that I need to be more peculiar but I do like 'em.

They are so much fun! So interesting! With the greenbottle blue's I'm going to run an enrichment test on them as juveniles, but their main purpose will be a courtship behavior study on the adults. They are notoriously hard to breed in captivity, so I'm going to see exactly what factors set them off and how females select their mates. This will result in a whole bunch of babies..too many for me to fit in this lab. I have a buy back contract with my wholesaler, but I know a few people have asked if they can keep one as a pet (including my boss!). If you'd like one, I can air mail it to you! I know they ship well, some of mine came to me from Oregon. It wouldn't be for a year to 18 months, but keep it in mind!

That is such an awesome offer! I'd have to think about it since I have a hard time taking care of myself and would have to look into scorpions as pets, but you've got me thinkin'!

Please do keep us updated as you can! This is so interesting!

The greenbottle blue's are actually the big blue tarantulas, second picture down. They are a lot of fun! They aren't the standard goofy ones that people usually get. These are kind of 'elite' tarantulas. They are really hardy though and need less care than some of the others ( one of the reasons I chose them). They also spend more time wandering and less hiding, and form really elaborate web platforms for themselves. Feed them crikets and clean out their container once a week and they are happy to be ornaments! Perfect for my lab set up.

Oh I'm curious, can they sting? What do you do in that case?

They can sting, but these are not the really dangerous kind (Arizona Black Scorpions, I believe are the really venomous ones. I don't know their genus and species of the top of my head). For these guys, its actually pretty easy. Just rise it with some soap and put some ice on it. It HURTS for the first few minutes though! I got stung while unloading them. Like in the picture, if you feed them in excess, they'll hold what they don't immediately eat and then you're pretty safe because you can grab their tail and they don't bother struggling.
