That's what the vet told us yesterday. This is a new vet that we found when we adopted Shadow and needed to have him neutered. (All our cats are adopted strays - Spike was born in the desert and his mother had died, Bonnie was abandoned at our apartment complex in Las Vegas, and Shadow - another abandoned pet, we believe - was wandering the streets back in December just before the subzero weather set in.) We took Shadow in for shots and neutering and made an appointment for the other two. Irish took them in yesterday and while he was there, the vet questioned him as to where our female cat was, since the paperwork mentioned a male and a female. Irish pointed out Bonnie to him - and the vet informed him that Bonnie was not, in fact, our little girly cat as we've been thinking for the past 2+ years, but rather a small male. ! Our girl - isn't. She's a boy!
The vet said Bonnie was not just neutered (testicles removed with the empty sac remaining in place) but completely emasculated - we seriously did think the remains of the sac were girly bits, that's how much was taken away - and done at a very young age, before developing much male hormone, so he would remain small. Basically, Bonnie is androgynous. I'm still laughing about it this morning - talk about being mistaken! (In our defense, the vet in Las Vegas thought he was a girl as well.) We always figured that the reason she never went into heat was because she'd already been spayed. (If it had turned out that she hadn't been, we'd have had it done.) Well, she never went into heat because she's not a she.
Bonnie's still mama's girl, er, boy, though, sleeping next to me or on my hip, as lovey as always.
kitties!,
funny,
oops!
