It's interesting - since I was a kid - I mean a little kid - I've been defined by my intellect. "The smart one." Both my sisters are just as smart as I am - my middle sister probably moreso - but they didn't get stuck with that label. I've heard plenty of aunts and uncles say, "It's too bad Colleen never got to finish college; she's so smart" - but have never once heard any of them say the same thing about either of my sisters, and it's equally true for both of them. Perhaps it's because they both deliberately made life choices that kept them out of college when their peers were going and I dropped out because my parents were broke - still, it's always seemed odd to me.

My youngest sister was "the rebellious one", middle sister was "the good one" - I guess in the long run I prefer the label I got stuck with; at least it's neutral! I figure the "rebellious" label gives a teen no reason to try to be anything but, and the "good" label is just so much to live up to. (Though in the interests of full disclosure, I could've easily worn the "good girl" label as well. It's just that the "smart" label was the one that stuck.) No reason behind my meandering today, just thinking about the labels we stick on our kids (grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc.).
